Sally Fielding
Sally Fielding is an English entrepreneur and businesswoman and founder of Sally's Cottages.[1]. She was born in Eskdale in the Lake District and currently lives in Kirkby Lonsdale with her husband and three children. She was working as a freelance web designer[2] when a chance opportunity in 2003[3] kickstarted a business letting holiday cottages across the Lake District and Cumbria.
Fielding is the daughter of author Ian Hall and sister to novelist Catherine Hall.
Early life
Fielding was born in Eskdale and grew up on Fisherground, a farm and campsite run by her parents and two friends[4]. She attended Wyndham School in Egremont, then studied at Durham University from 1993 to 1996, graduating in Anthropology. She immediately went on to study a Masters in Tourism at the Manchester Metropolitan University.[2]
Career
Early Career
After graduation, Fielding worked for a brief period at Muncaster Castle in Cumbria before moving to Chester in 1999 to work with a web design company. When she returned to the Lake District, she set up on her own as a web designer.[2]
Sally's Cottages
A chance conversation in 2003 led to Fielding letting a cottage off a neighbour who was struggling to find a tenant and then sub-letting to tourists to the area. Word spread in the small village and, by the end of the year, Fielding was looking after three cottages[5]. Her husband, Robert, also joined the business after the first year.
In 2006, Sally hired her first member of staff for the business.
In 2010, the business' first office was opened in Keswick in the North Lakes.
Fielding gave a TedX talk in Whitehaven in September 2016 about creating a buzz around a business, drawing on her personal experience of building a multi-million pound business.
In 2019, the company celebrated reaching 500 holiday cottages[6] and opened a second office in Windermere[7].
Sally's Cottages and Fielding herself have won multiple awards. She is also well-known for a number of iconic photographs to promote the business, including 'working' at a desk on top of Blencathra[8], a mountain in the Lake District, and floating a bed on Derwentwater[9]
