Salty Dog Paddle is an American-based non-profit organization that offers surfing and water safety lessons to fund animal rights activities. It started as a for-profit but migrated to be a non-profit charitable organization in 2015.

History[edit]

The organization was founded in 1977 by Ronald and Diane Doyle in Brevard County, Florida, USA with the intent of "using Florida long boards to get dogs over their fear of the water and to teach them how to swim without life jackets." In 1980, a surf shop was opened in Melbourne, Florida called Salty Dog Surf. Five years later, they adopted a Bull Terrier named Evil Eye as its official mascot.[3]

Clinton Cimring and Hilary Dowson turned the business into a non profit organization and, in 2015,[3] it was recognized as an 501c3 public charity.[4] As such, it has raised over US$1 million for injured rescue dogs.[5][6] It now uses water sports to raise awareness for animal rights and water safety by offering watersports activities and events.Sun Sentinel Labor Day Weekend things to do (anti-Dorian Edition): Lots of pre-storm and indoor fun still to be had It defines its mission as:[7]Salty Dog Paddle is a nonprofit surf and SUP brand whose sole purpose is to save injured rescue dogs and marinelife. By stepping up where animal rescues can’t. Through the brand and dog-friendly water sports activities and events.” [8]

Activities[edit]

Since 2015, Salty Dog Paddle has helped in the rescue and adoption of over 1,000 animals. It has further raised over 1 Million Dollars (US) for emergency medical situations.[3][9][10] The money is, in turn, used to save animals from "distress at pet shelters and rescues." Italian-American businessman Lorenzo Borghese, of the Borghese family was also a part of a fundraising event held by the organization.[11]

Staff[edit]

Since turning into a non-profit organization, Salty Dog Paddle has become a wholly volunteer-run organization.[12][13][11][14]
