The Salvadoran-Honduran War (1871) or Honduran intervention in El Salvador was a conflict between the republics of El Salvador and Honduras. The invasion of El Salvador was divided in three theaters, the northern theater was head by the Honduran generals Francisco López and André Alfred Van Severen , the central theater head by Mariano Alvarez, and the southern theater headed by Juan López, which finally ended in the temporary occupation of El Salvador by Honduras
Prelude[edit]
Normally It's said that the causes of the war were the constant offenses and opposition received by the conservative government El Salvador against the president of Honduras
However there are sources that confirm that Jose María Medina desired to annex the Republic of El Salvador to the Honduran territory. Task couldn't be fulfilled because of the coup d'etat made on the president at the same time.
Conduct of the War[edit]
Finally, Honduras declared war on El Salvador on March 5, 1871. The war was divided between southern, central, and northern theaters
Southern Theater[edit]
On March 16, the Honduran army attacked the city of Pasaquina defended successfully by the general Florencio Xatruch with 800 men. Then Xatruch took over the city of Nacaome and continued marching towards Comayagua to proclaim himself as president.
Central Theater[edit]
The Honduran army invaded El Salvador from the city of La Gotera where the Honduran army crushed the Salvadoran army in battle, however there were a large number of casualties on both sides.
Northern Theater[edit]
Then Honduran army proceeded to invade El Salvador from Sensuntepeque, once this city was taken, Jose Maria Medina proclaimed Santiago González Portillo as provisional president of El Salvador. The decisive combats were made in Santa Ana starting on April 7 and ending on April 10, this resulted on a decisive Honduran victory. In San Miguel, the Honduran army defeated totally the army of the general Tomas Martínez. On April 12, the Honduran army made its enter on the Salvadoran capital, San Salvador, after a campaign of 27 days, where they captured the Salvadoran president Francisco Dueñas and the ex-president of Nicaragua, Tomás Martínez.
Conclusion[edit]
The Honduran flag was put on the presidential palace of El Salvador, marking that the country was occupied by Honduras. In his famous speech about the event, the Honduran president José María Medina said, "The war that the Honduran government declared on El Salvador to protect it from the offenses of the Salvadoran government, has ended, and our soldiers come back filled with glory and pride to have fulfilled their task"
The Honduran army took San Salvador with approximately 1,200 soldiers with only 315-330 casualties, while El Salvador has approximately 1,700 soldiers having more than 800 casualties.
