In 2001, Asghari's father moved from Iran to the United States, and worked as a truck driver.[3] Five years later, Asghari moved alone at age 12 to Los Angeles, California, where his father resided. At the time, Asghari spoke little English.[4] Asghari shortened his given name Hesam to Sam as it was easier to pronounce.[5] Asghari's sisters would eventually move to the United States in the years after.[3]

Asghari attended Westlake High School and participated in gymnastics, soccer, and football;[4] he graduated in 2012.[6] In 2013, Asghari had moved into an apartment that he shared with two roommates. During this time, Asghari experienced unwanted weight gain, measuring 290 pounds.[4][2] After changing his health habits, Asghari had lost around 100 pounds in six months.[2]

Asghari also attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and later Moorpark College.[1] Asghari states that he developed a passion for acting during his college years.[4] Eventually, Asghari would also show interest in law enforcement, and attended a police academy.[1][2]
