Samuel "Sam" Bertram (born February 6, 1993) is an Australian-American entrepreneur, engineer, and former tennis player who co-founded OnePointOne, a company that develops vertical farming technology.[1] Bertram's work has focused on sustainable agriculture and was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Social Impact in 2021.[2]

Early life and education

Sam Bertram was born in February 6, 1993 in Wheelers Hill, Victoria, Australia.[3] In 2011, he moved to the United States with his brother John to pursue collegiate tennis careers.[4]

Bertram attended Fresno City College before transferring to Santa Clara University.[5] He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2016, followed by a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Mechatronics and Robotics in 2018.[6]

Tennis career

NCAA Division I

After transferring to Santa Clara University, Bertram continued his tennis career at the NCAA Division I level.[7] He captained the Division I Tennis team and competed as a senior in 2014, finishing with a 9-14 record in singles.[8] He earned the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week Award on 14 April 2014 and was named to the All-WCC Second Team in doubles with partner Ilya Osintsev, posting an 11-5 record.[9]

Junior College

While at Fresno City College, Bertram achieved significant success in tennis.[10] He won the Individual Junior College Tennis State Champion title in California in April 2013 and finished as runner-up in the Doubles State Championship in 2013.[11] He was ranked as the No. 1 Junior College tennis player in California and helped lead the Fresno City College Men's Tennis team to consecutive California Community College Athletic Association State Championships.[12]

Career

OnePointOne founding

In July 2017, Sam Bertram and his brother John founded OnePointOne which stated its goal as addressing global malnutrition.[13] The company name references the 1.1 billion people who began the millennium malnourished.[14] Bertram's Master's Capstone Project at Santa Clara University served as the technological foundation for the company.[15]

Technology and business development

OnePointOne has developed automated vertical farming technology.[16] The company has raised over $75 million in investments from investors including ServiceNow founder Fred Luddy, tennis player Novak Djokovic, and HRH Khaled bin Alwaleed.

The company expanded operations with a 50,000 square-foot facility in Avondale, Arizona in 2021.[17] In 2025, OnePointOne partnered with AutoStore to launch Opollo Farm, an automated vertical farming system in Phoenix that supplies Whole Foods Market stores.[18]

Recognition

Bertram was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Social Impact in 2021.[19] He has been described as a dedicated to solving global food challenges.[20]

Advisory roles

Bertram has served on several advisory boards, including the Stanford University Advisory Board for the School of Engineering (2020-2022) and the Santa Clara University Advisory Board for the School of Engineering (2020-present).[21] He was also an Entrepreneur in Residence at Stanford University's Global Projects Center (2019-2020).[22]

Personal life

Bertram is an Australian immigrant to the United States who moved to the country in 2011.[23] As of 2025, he resides in Scottsdale, Arizona.[24]
