Sam Merson (/ˈmɜːsən/; born 8 March 1995) is an English professional footballer who most recently played for St. Albans City in the National League South. He plays as a Forward and is currently a free agent.
Merson started his senior career at Boreham Wood in 2014, and after brief spells at Biggleswade Town and Redditch United, he joined St. Albans City in May 2016.[2]
Club career[edit]
St. Albans City[edit]
Merson signed for St. Albans City on 19 May 2016.[2] Upon signing, the clubs assistant manager Lee Allinson stated — “I’m extremely pleased we have managed to beat a host of other clubs including offers from the Conference North to secure Sam’s signature. We look forward to working with him and seeing him in a Saints shirt next season”.[3] In October, his hot form saw him score six goals in four games, with the Saints winning all five of their matches that month. Merson's solid performances lead to him being awarded the club's Player of the Month award[4], which then lead to him signing a new 18-month contract with the club on 13 October 2016.[2] Merson impressed in his debut season for the Saints with twelve goals and seven assists in all competitions.[5] He was named the club's Young Player of the Season for the 2016/17 season.[2]
On 27 January 2018, Merson scored four goals in a 7-2 thrashing of East Thurrock United.[6] In a post-match interview, manager Ian Allinson said — “His performance was outstanding” [and that he] “could have quite easily scored five”.[7] On 3 April, he scored a brace in a 2-1 home victory over Braintree Town, his latter goal being a late winner in the 85th minute.[8] On 25 April, Merson was awarded both the club's Player of the Month award for April and the Supporters' Player of the Season award for the 2017/18 campaign.[9] He ended the season as the Saints' top goalscorer with twenty-four goals in all competitions.[5]
On 6 June 2020, St. Albans City announced on their Twitter account that Merson had left the club after four years.[10]
Personal life[edit]
Merson is the son of former Arsenal and England international footballer, Paul Merson[11]. He is one-eighth Italian through his father.[12]
