Sam Twiselton

Professor Sam Twiselton OBE is the director of the Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University and a leading expert on teacher training who has influenced Government policy on teacher education and curriculum development. In 2019 the Times Education Supplement named her one of the most influential people of the year.[1]

Career and positions held

She has, and continues to, contribute to a number of national and regional advisory boards and committees:

  • A member of the advisory panel for the Carter Review of Initial Teacher Training (ITT).[2]
  • A member of the DfE Expert Panel of the ITT Behaviour working group which reported to government in 2016.[3]
  • Adviser to the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) curriculum panel.[4]
  • Vice-President (external) of the Chartered College of Teaching.[5][6]
  • Academic Lead for South Yorkshire Futures, an area-based programme of work which aims to improve educational attainment and raise aspiration in South Yorkshire.[7]
  • Chair of the Initial Teacher Education content group[8] which provided recommendations to the Department for Education (DfE) on how to align teacher training with a new early career framework for teachers.
  • Vice-Chair of the Doncaster Opportunity Area Partnership Board.[9]
  • A member of the DfE specialist National Professional Qualifications Advisory Group.[10]
  • A member of the Harrow International Expert Advisory Group.[11]
  • Chair of the Academic Advisory Group for the Ambition Institute, a graduate school for teachers.[12]
  • Trustee for Astrea Multi Academy Trust[13][14], the Shine Education Charity[15], the National Teacher Accreditation[16][17] and the Learning Unlimited Teaching School Alliance.[18][19]

Awards

In June 2018 she was named in the Queen's birthday honours as a recipient of an OBE for services to Higher Education.[20]
