Dr. Samantha Wells, Ph.D.
Dr. Samantha Wells, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist and Co-Director of the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research (IMHPR) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She serves as a Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Wells also holds positions as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at Deakin University in Australia.
Career
Dr. Wells’ research primarily focuses on aggression and victimization experiences among young people in drinking situations, including physical aggression between men and sexual harassment and aggression by men toward women. Her work examines physical aggression between men and incidents of sexual harassment and aggression by men toward women in these environments. By applying a gender lens, Dr. Wells investigates factors such as young men’s normative attitudes and beliefs about aggression while drinking, masculine norms, and peer dynamics. One of her key contributions is the development and validation of a multidimensional inventory measuring young men’s attitudes and beliefs about aggression between men in drinking situations.[1] [2].
Expanding this research, Dr. Wells is exploring men’s attitudes and beliefs surrounding sexual harassment and aggression toward women in drinking venues. The long-term goal of this work is to create interventions that reduce the incidence of sexual victimization among young women in social drinking contexts[3]
Community-Based Research Initiatives
In collaboration with Shkaabe Makwa at CAMH, Dr. Wells leads community-based research-to-action initiatives in First Nations communities[4]. These projects involve close partnerships with community members, Elders, leaders, and health service providers, alongside experts in Indigenous health. The research team collects both qualitative and quantitative data from an Indigenous social determinants of health perspective. This includes conducting in-depth interviews with individuals who have lived or are living with mental health challenges, as well as administering co-developed community-wide surveys.
Using participatory action research, Dr. Wells and her team support communities in developing wellness strategies informed by local data. These initiatives have led to knowledge-sharing activities, community reports, and academic publications, as well as meaningful impacts within participating communities.
Recent Projects
With funding from a womenmind seed grant, Dr. Wells has embarked on a collaborative project examining the mental health effects of encounters with children during international operations among Canadian women service members and Veterans. This initiative involves partnerships with Veterans Affairs Canada, the MacDonald Franklin Operational Stress Injury Research Centre, Mount Saint Vincent University, Royal Military College of Canada, the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research, and the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families.
Through her extensive body of work, Dr. Wells continues to contribute significantly to understanding and improving mental health, gender-based violence prevention, and Indigenous community wellness.
