Same Moonlight (一樣的月光) is the main song from the 1983 solo album by Su Rui (Chinese:蘇芮, also known as Julie Sue), and was also featured in the 1983 Taiwanese movie, Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?

In 1983, Cinema City director Yu Kan-ping (虞戡平) got the idea for a film, Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?.[1], which combines music and drama and tells the story of Amei[2][3], who longs to enter the entertainment industry during Taiwan’s rapid economic development in the 70s and 80s[4]. This album successfully combined the music of the film with the protagonist’s story, and was Taiwan’s first album produced as a music video. Yu was still looking for a playback singer when he heard Su Rui singing Western songs on TV. She sang well, so he chose her for the singing role.[5] The album was produced by Li Shouquan (李壽全), and featured songs written by Luo Dayou (羅大佑), and Liang Hongzhi (梁弘志).[6] The lyrics of “The Same Moonlight” have Luo Dayou’s style, and present a critique and reflection on the changes in society, and with Su Rui’s unique singing voice the result is a sound known as “Black Su Rui” (黑色蘇芮)[7]. It is one of the most important and outstanding works of Chinese popular music[8]

Release

This album was featured in the movie, Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?, and it went on to top Taiwan’s Mandarin song charts for nine consecutive weeks.

About the song, Zhu Weiyin (朱衛茵), host of UFO Radio once said, “When Julie went to Hong Kong to hold a concert, she was extremely surprised. She had no idea why she had become so popular. These songs shocked music fans in Hong Kong. …For a woman to be able to sing rock like that, it was rock and roll from the soul. So Mister Peng really allowed Julie to become famous in Hong Kong, and allowed her to truly be able to express her inner voice.”[9]
