Samuel Osuolale Jonathan (born December 3, 1978) is a Nigerian cinematographer and director of photography known for his work in Nollywood film and television. He has received various accolades, including a nomination for Best Cinematographer at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards in 2022.[1][2]

Early life and education

Samuel was born on December 3, 1978, in Osun State, Nigeria. He grew up in Lagos and attended Subola Primary School in Surulere, Lagos, followed by Ansar Ud-Deen Grammar School. His interest in visual storytelling was nurtured by his father, who worked as a professional photographer and videographer.

Samuel obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University, specializing in Photojournalism and Cinematography.

Career

Samuel began his career in cinematography in the early 2000s, working on various Nollywood productions. His work spans over two decades and includes collaborations with notable Nigerian filmmakers.

His notable works include serving as cinematographer on Zero Hour (2018),[3] Voiceless (2020), Ogeere (2023), Conversations in Transit (2024), Hijack '93 (2024), Etutu (2024), and Sin (2025). He has also worked on The Journey (2025) and Reflection (2025).

In 2022, Samuel received nominations for Best Cinematographer at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for his work on The Mystic River and Amina.[4][5]
