The Honourable Justice Samuel Alexander Vandongen is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, serving since 17 December 2024.[1] His appointment formed part of a cohort of eight new judges announced by the Commonwealth Attorney-General in December 2024.[2]
Early life and education
Justice Vandongen graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia in 1991 and was admitted to legal practice in Western Australia in 1992.[1]
Legal career
Vandongen joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (WA) in 1996, later serving as a Crown Prosecutor in New South Wales before returning to Western Australia as Consultant State Prosecutor in 2006.[1] He joined the independent Bar in 2008 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2010.[1]
Judicial career
Vandongen was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2022 and to its Court of Appeal in 2023.[3][4] The Attorney-General announced his appointment to the Federal Court on 6 December 2024, with his commission commencing on 17 December 2024 in the Perth Registry.[2][1] A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court to welcome Justice Vandongen was held on 7 March 2025, with the transcript published by the Court.[5]
