The San Martino Museum of Religious Art (museo d'arte sacra San Martino) is an art museum in Alzano Lombardo, Province of Bergamo, Italy. Its most notable work is Palma Vecchio's The Martyrdom of Saint Peter Martyr.[1]

History[edit]

Created in 1995 by don Alberto Facchinetti, parish priest of Alzano, the museum shows the history of the town and its Basilica of San Martino through paintings, sculptures, goldwork, jewellery, books, decrees, reconstructions, drawings, wills, documents, liturgical banners, monstrances, chalices, church vestments and crosses, including the 1457 manuscript founding the parish.

The church was rebuilt in 1442 on top of a smaller 11th century structure and was also notably enlarged and redecorated in the 17th century by architect Gerolamo Quadrio. He also designed its new sacristy, a highly notable example of Lombard Baroque architecture, which can be accessed directly from the museum and to which a whole section of the museum is dedicated.

The museum of religious art occupies the part of a building known as "the palazzo" closest to the adjoining to the basilica (the other floors a conference suite). The building was previously used as the residence of the Pelliccioli family and, after changing hands several times, it and its courtyard were acquired by the town which collaborated with the parish to restore and reopen it in 1953. However, it only housed a museum more than forty years later.
