Sancta Maria College is a Catholic secondary school located in Louisburgh, County Mayo, Ireland.[1] The school was Ireland's first Catholic co-educational secondary school.[2]

History[edit]

In 1919, two Sisters of Mercy arrived in Louisburgh, which began the revolution of the first Catholic Secondary Co-Educational School in Ireland. The school was originally called Holy Rosary Secondary School,[3] but more familiarly known as ‘The Convent’. When the school first opened there were only twenty pupils who had to pay a fee of £9 per student per school year.[4]

In 2007, the school began operating under the trusteeship of CEIST Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust.[1]

In 2008, the school was ranked 15 (out of 28) in Mayo for third level attendance with 77% progressing to third level. The vast majority of students enrolled in NUI Galway.[5]

New Campus Extensions[edit]

In 2017, the school underwent a major extension at a cost €7 million.[2] The extension project continued for 20 months which covered the following; construction of a new 2-storey extension comprising new main entrance, 12 specialist classrooms, general purpose/dining room and kitchenette.[6]
