"Sanda Wathuren" (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a Sri Lankan Sinhala-language song performed by Ashanthi De Alwis. It was released in 2006 as the lead single and title track from her debut solo album, Sandawathuren.[1]
The song was composed by Rajeev De Silva, with lyrics written by Nilar N. Kasim and Ashanthi herself.[2] "Sanda Wathuren" is a significant song in modern Sri Lankan music, blending Sinhala pop and R&B with English rap verses, a style Ashanthi helped pioneer in the local industry.
Background and Release
Following her success as part of the duo Bathiya and Santhush and the group Ashanthi n' Ranidu, "Sanda Wathuren" was released as Ashanthi's debut solo track. The song was released by Maharaja Entertainments (Pvt) Ltd.
The song's composition by Rajeev De Silva combines a traditional melodic structure with contemporary R&B and hip-hop beats. The lyrics, co-written by Ashanthi, include both Sinhala and English verses, which was a hallmark of the new wave of Sri Lankan pop music in the 2000s.
Reception
"Sanda Wathuren" was a major commercial success and established Ashanthi as a formidable solo artist. According to her official biography, the song "topped the charts even before the release of the album" and was noted for its unique sound.[1]
The song is considered one of Ashanthi's signature hits and remains popular, frequently performed at her live concerts.[3] Its enduring popularity led to the release of a sequel, "Sandawathuren 2," in 2018, which featured artist Yashan.[4]
