Sandra L. Richter
Sandra L. Richter (born February 13, 1961) is an Old Testament scholar, author, international speaker, and professor, who currently holds the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Her areas of specialization include Environmental Theology, Hebrew Language, Deuteronomy, the Deuteronomistic History, and the intersection between Syro-Palestinian Archeology and the Bible.
Biography
Richter earned her BS from the University of Valley Forge where she trained for ministry (1983), her MA in theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (1991), and her PhD in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University’s Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department (2001).[1]
Richter began her academic career at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY in 2000. While at Asbury, she published two major works, the first being The Deuteronomistic History and the Name Theology: lešakkēn šemô šām in the Bible and the Ancient Near East (2002)[2] which “revolutionize[d] our understanding of a major tenet of biblical theology”[3] by making "a high-profile contribution to the debate about a Deuteronomistic Name theology";[4] and the second being The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament (2008).[5] In addition, Richter designed an Israel Studies program[6] for the seminary (now under the direction of Lawson G. Stone[7]) specializing in field archaeology and historical geography, associating the seminary with excavations at Tel Zayit (Ronald Tappy),[8] Tel Dan (David Ilan),[9] Tel Rehov (Ami Mazar), and Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem. Richter also began her work in environmental theology while at Asbury with her publication of "A Biblical Theology of Creation Care: Is Environmentalism a Christian Value?"[10]
In 2009, Richter accepted a position at Wesley Biblical Seminary in Jackson, MS.[11] While serving in Jackson, Richter began publishing her Epic of Eden curricula with Seedbed Publishing. The curricula include The Epic of Eden: Understanding the Old Testament; The Epic of Eden: Isaiah; The Epic of Eden: Ruth for Seekers; and The Epic of Eden: Jonah. Her latest curriculum, The Epic of Eden: Psalms, published with HarperCollins Christian Publishing, will be available in June 2021.
Richter moved to Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL in 2013, where she expanded her efforts in environmental theology, helping to launch a new course on Environmental Stewardship: The Bible & Biology.[12] Her most recent book entitled Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says About the Environment and Why it Matters[13] received the 2020 Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Top Shelf Book Cover Award.[14]
Now at Westmont College (since 2017)[15], Richter has made significant contributions on the intersection of the Bible and archaeology. These include: "The Archaeology of Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim and Why It Matters,"[16] "The Question of Provenance and the Economics of Deuteronomy,"[17] and "The Question of Provenance and the Economics of Deuteronomy: The Neo-Babylonian and Persian Periods."[18]
Professional Activities and Experience
Richter currently serves on the NIV Committee on Bible Translation.[19] She has served as both president (2018–2019)[20] and vice president (2017–2018)[21] of the Pacific Region of the Society of Biblical Literature and is currently a Member at Large.[22] She has served on the board of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance under Blessed Earth, the American Bible Society: Scripture and Translation Committee, the Institute of Biblical Research Program Committee, and on the Editorial Board for the Bulletin for Biblical Research.
