Sandra Mae Frank

Sandra Mae Frank (born March 21, 1990 in Louisville, Kentucky) is a US American actress. She is known for performances in theatre, movies and TV series. She advocates for deaf actors being casted on the same level as hearing actors.[1] She acted as the first and, to this date, only deaf actor in Broadway's history to perform the lad role in a Broadway musical portraying Wendla in Spring awakening.

Since 2021 she can be seen on the NBC drama series New Amsterdam, which began in September 2018 and ended January 2023. She became a main cast in season 5 after she first entered the show as recurring only in season 4. She was casted for the movie "The silent hour" which was produced in 2023.

Frank is continuously working at the Deaf Austin Theatre.[2]

Early life and education

Frank attended the Louisville Deaf Oral School, now known as Heuser Hearing Institute and Learning Academy, and duPont Manual High School. While attending duPont Manual High School, Frank acted in the Youth Performing Arts School production of Crimes of the Heart.[3]

She graduated from Gallaudet University in Theatre Arts[4] in 2013.[5]

Career

In 2014, Sandra Mae Frank appeared in the movie "Beautiful Sounds of Love". [citation needed]

In 2015, she appeared in the TV show Switched at Birth as a receptionist. [citation needed]

In the same year, she acted on Broadway stage in the musical Spring awakening which included hearing and deaf actors, also including Oscar winner Marlee Matlin.[6][7]

Frank acted as Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof in the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma in 2016.[8] In this performance, hearing and deaf actors acted together on stage.[9]

She was part of the cast in the horror movie "Soul to keep" in 2018[10] and participated in the TV show "Reverse Polarity". [citation needed]

In 2019, Frank appeared in the science-fiction movie "Multiverse" as a member of a group of students who experiment with the connections between different versions of the universe.[11]. Also in this year, she acted in the romantic Christmas movie "Season of Love"[12][13] and in the TV show "Daybreak". [citation needed]

Frank had a guest appearance in the show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, in episode 9 of the first season, where she interpreted Rachel Platten's Fight Song in ASL, while the voice is replaced by a cello.[14][15]

In 2021, Sandra Mae Frank entered the NBC TV show New Amsterdam at the beginning of season 4, joining the team of Dr. Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) in the role of deaf oncologist Dr. Elizabeth Wilder.[16] Her role was promoted to main character in season 5 and participated until the ending of the show in January 2023.[17] Again she worked together with Marlee Matlin, who appeared in a guest role.

She performed the ASL synchronization of the USA national anthem and "America the Beautiful" at the 2022 56th Super Bowl in Inglewood, California.[18].

In 2022 Frank was co-director of the musical The Music Man at the Olney Theatre.[19] For this work, Frank was awarded with the Helen Hayes Award beginning of 2023. [20]

In March 2023, Frank acted in the leading role of Cinderella (Rodgers and Hammerstein musical) in a mixed deaf and hearing production of Zach Theatre in cooperation with Deaf Austin Theatre.[21]

Frank was casted in 2022 for the 2023 movie "The Silent Hour", co-starring with Joel Kinnaman, Mekhi Phifer and Mark Strong.[22][23]

Personal life

Frank is deaf, losing her hearing at the age of three years.[24]
