Vidushi Sangeeta Bandopadhyay (born 1968) is an Indian Classical Singer of Lucknow, Patiala and Indore Gharana. The eldest daughter of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee[1] and Late Sujata Chatterjee.

Early Life & background[edit]

Sangeeta was born into a musical family in Calcutta, India. Her father Pandit Sankha Chatterjee[2] is an Indian tabla player with international music career and now stands as a school of himself in this field. Sangeeta was initiated into music at the age of five by her paternal uncle, an earnest music admirer and singer Sri Subodh Chatterjee. At the age of eight with her self developed sense of notes she accompanied Prakriti Mohan Majumder in harmonium on stage. By the time Sangeeta reached ten years, she developed the skill of identifying accurate notes by listening to any type of musical notes. She accompanied Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri of Bengal at All India Radio (A.I.R), Kolkata as a special guest artist on harmonium - she was twelve then. Over the course of time, Sangeeta trained herself under Chinmoy Lahiri of Luckhnow Gharana, Ustad Munawar Ali Khan [3] of Patiala Gharana - son of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan[4] and Pandit Kamal Bandyopadhyay of Indore Gharana - disciple of Ustad Ameer Khan[5]. With personal interactions she received musical advises from great musicians like, Ustad Keramattulla Khan, Ustad Allarakha Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit V.G. Jog, Pandit Kishen Maharaj, Ustad Zakir Hussain, to name a few. She learnt Bengali Kirtan from Vidushi Chabi Bandyopadhyay, Old Bengali songs from Sri Chandidas Mal, Bengali folk song from Sri Paresh Dev and Bhajan from Prof. B. D. Patekar.[6], Kolkata and Masters in Music from Rabindra Bharati University[7], Kolkata.

Sangeeta holds first class Economics degree from Jadavpur University[8] (JU), Kolkata and Masters in Music from Rabindra Bharati University[9], Kolkata.

Career[edit]

Sangeeta gave her first stage performance in 1976 in India. Her first international performance was at the “LA VOCE” International music festival of Italy in 1983. Her notable international performances were at Vision Jazz Festival[10] - June 2007 New York along with William Parker[11], Bill Cole, Hamid Drake[12] - it did a world premiere release as "Double Sunrise Over Neptune" over digital platforms and CDs. Sangeeta was first Indian vocalist to perform at Vision Jazz Festival New York. In May 2016, Sangeeta performed at World Women Vocalists Festival in Geneva along with Nihar Mehta and Illyas Khan. Sangeeta started Indian classical vocal workshop in Giorgio Cini Foundation Venice [13] (IIMC) in 1991 and worked as visiting professor for five years. She is the first Indian vocalist to perform at Vision Jazz Festival New York 2007, Beethoven Fest [14] Bonn 2014, World Women Vocalists Festival 2016, Son diHiver Festival Paris, International Gong Festival Torino and first Indian vocalist to sing vocal duo with Soprano[15]. Sangeeta started singing as a graded artiste of All India Radio (A.I.R.)[16] from 1990, awarded Top grade in 2008. Among her several national and international albums, KHAYAL(2012) from SAREGAMA India limited was nominated under the best Indian classical vocal album by the Global Indian Music Awards (GIMA) in 2013. Sangeeta designed 12 sessions of music appreciation course along with the sarode maestro Padmabhushan Buddhadev Dasgupta[17] and the erstwhile director of SRA Mr. Ravi Mathur for the Sangeet Research Academy[18] (SRA) of Kolkata. The Indo-Jazz-Electro fusion number 'Mother Earth' has reached the Top Ten chart of world music in Europe in 1998. Her song 'Prayer' has been featured in the album "The Greatest Songs Ever:India CD" (2007) by Petrol. The Jazz number Morning Mantra has reached the Top Ten chart of world jazz music in USA in 2008.
