Sankha Subhra Devbarman

Sankha Subhra Devbarman is an eminent Tripuri-Indian poet, novelist and columnist from Tripura.[1] He is currently the Regional Director of North East, Ministry of Tourism.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Sankha Subhra was born on 2 April 1967 in Agartala. He is the son of Salil Debbarman, who is the state's leading Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) leader and former member of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). His mother Sabita Debbarman is an eminent writer, social activist, theatre personality and former member of Tripura State Commission for women (2003 -2006). Radha Mohan Thakur, the Judge of Appellate Session Court and later on the Chief of Tripura Royal Army was Sankha Subhra's Great Grand Father. Radha Mohan Thakur was also pioneer in formalizing the Kokborok grammar. Sankha Subhra's Great Grand Mother was princess Kumudini Devi, daughter of King Birchandra Manikya. He started his writing career here by penning poems and short stories and gradually he authored a number of novels also. His state award winning novel Banakuntalar Upakhyan was serialised in six episodes for national network of Doordarshan. A book of his short stories now included in the syllabus of Assam University, Silchar. He won the prestigious 'Times Stellar Icon' award for literature by India's largest media group, 'The Times of India' owned by Bennett Coleman. Recently he won Byatikram Pride of North East Award in the category of "Literature".
