The college was established in 2002 to address the lack of higher education facilities in the Bagmara area. It was founded by local philanthropist and politician Engr. Enamul Haque, who named the institution after his mother, Saleha, and father, Emarat Uddin. Since its inception, the college has transformed the educational landscape of the Shuvodanga Union and surrounding localities, providing a gateway to higher studies for thousands of rural students.
For over two decades, the institution operated as Saleha Emarat Degree College. However, following a government directive in early 2026 to rename institutions named after political figures or their relatives to reflect local geographical identity, the Ministry of Education officially changed the name. On February 3, 2026, the institution was renamed Sankoa Degree College, restoring its connection to the local village of Sankoa where it is situated.[1]
