Sanskrit cinema is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Sanskrit language. Since 1983, more than 30 films have been produced. The medium lacks a conventional, separate film industry or a dedicated theatrical distribution network. Consequently, many Sanskrit films rely on film festivals, independent screenings, and digital platforms like YouTube for distribution. Several Sanskrit films are available to watch on YouTube for free.

History

The first Sanskrit feature film, Adi Shankaracharya, was directed by G.V. Iyer and released in 1983. At the 31st National Film Awards, it won four awards: Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Audiography.[1][2] Iyer subsequently directed Bhagavad Gita in 1992, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film at the 40th National Film Awards.[3]

Between 2015 and 2017, four Sanskrit films were produced in Kerala. Vinod Mankara's Priyamanasam (2015) was the first Sanskrit film from the state; it won the Best Feature Film in Sanskrit at the 63rd National Film Awards and was screened at the 46th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Ishti (2016), directed by G. Prabha, was the first Sanskrit film based on a contemporary social issue and was screened in the panorama section at the 47th IFFI.[4][5]

M. Surendran's Suryakantha (2017) won the Special Jury Award at the 2017 Kerala Film Critics Association Awards.[6] P. K. Ashokan's Anurakthi (2017) was the first film to feature a Sanskrit song picturised in a 3D format.[7] It was screened at the 48th IFFI.[8][9] Dr. Nidheesh Gopi directed Pratikriti.[10][10]

Suresh Gayathri's Madhurasmitham (2019) was promoted as the first children's Sanskrit film and won the Travancore International Award for Best Film.[11][12] Ravishankar Venkateswaran's Punyakoti (2020) became the first animated film in the Sanskrit language.[13]

In 2021, Namo, centering on the friendship between Sudama and Sri Krishna, was screened at the IFFI Indian Panorama section.[14] Shibu Kumaranallur's Samasyah (2021) was released as an environmental film on an OTT platform.[15] Vinod Mankara's Yaanam (2022) was released as the first Sanskrit science-documentary, focusing on the Mars Orbiter Mission.[16] Shruti Simon became the first female director in Sanskrit cinema with the film Dharmayodha (2023).[17] John Puthuva's Ekaki (2024) was noted as the first Sanskrit film to feature only a single character.[18]
