Santa Maria la Major is a Roman Catholic church in Inca on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca. It is located in the center of Inca at the address Plaça d'Orient 36.
Architecture and history[edit]
The first mention of the parish church dates back to 1248. It belonged to the Knights Templar. The current church is the third construction and was built only in the 18th/19th century. The facade is made of Mallorcan sandstone and is designed in the Baroque style. Inside the church, to the side of the entrance, there is a baptistery, with the panel painting Santa Maria la Major, created by Joan Daurer in 1373. It is the oldest painting in Mallorca whose painter is known by name. The chapel also preserves from the original church a wooden winch that was used to perform full-body baptisms of newborns, a custom that was officially abolished as early as 1250. The church is monument and registered in the local monument register under the number RI-51-0011599.
