Saptarshi Basu

Saptarshi Basu is an Indian mechanical engineer serving as the INAE Chair Professor and KSIIDC Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru..[1]
Early Life and Education
Basu earned his Master of Science (M.S.) in 2004 and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering in 2007, both from the University of Connecticut where he received the best graduate student award in the department. Following his doctorate, he joined the University of Central Florida as an assistant professor, where he served until 2010. He then joined the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru in 2010.[2]
Research and Career
At IISc, Basu leads the Experimental Thermo-Fluids Research Laboratory and has pursued extensive work in combustion, multiphase flows, bubbles, droplet and spray dynamics, interface physics, and biofluid applications.[3][4] His works have been recognized through press releases[5][6][7][8][9], editor choices[10][11][12][13][14][15], awards and various plenary/keynote lectures worldwide in conferences[16][17][18], universities[19][20] and workshops[21]. Prof. Basu acts as guest editor for journals like Experiments in Fluids[22] and EPJ-ST. He has served as editor of scientific reports and Advanced Powder Technology. He is also an Editorial Advisory Board Member of International Journal of Multiphase Flow[23].
Notable Contributions
Prof. Basu's research marries fundamental aspects of classical fluid mechanics like vortex dynamics[24] and swirling flows[25] and the more interdisciplinary aspects of interface transport as in droplets[26] to offer unprecedented insights into multiphase systems ubiquitous in applications ranging from turbines to surface patterning to healthcare.
Dr. Basu's work has opened up new avenues in the understanding of species transport, flow structures, self-excited instabilities and heat transfer in both reacting and non-reacting systems. His experiments and analyses at various spatio-temporal scales have enabled comprehensive understanding of the physics of transport processes in droplets, sprays, and flames in various multiphase systems. Dr. Basu is also a key exponent of high fidelity measurements and deep physical insights in interfacial processes[27] involving droplets of various kinds [colloidal, polymer, fuel, bacteria laden].[28] He has developed new diagnostic techniques[29] for interrogating small-scale phenomena with high resolution thereby revealing interesting coupling in different transport processes. He has pioneered indigenous injector technologies for gas turbines, hypersonics and additive manufacturing[30]
Saptarshi has lead large scale initiatives in the areas of combustion and solar thermal areas. In particular, he was instrumental in designing 1.) comprehensive optically accessible multiphase high-pressure combustor[31] and 2.) portable shock tube setup for answering some open-ended questions in gas turbine combustion like vortex-spray interactions, spray dispersion and breakups, flame-vortex interactions, modes of primary breakup in complex fluid droplets and generation of metal powder from liquid metal for additive manufacturing.[32] He was also instrumental in designing and probing the long-standing problems in thermal storage in solar thermal power plants using unique thermocline-based technique.[33] His research hence has catered to both the fundamental and applied sides of engineering. As an example, shock-droplet is a complicated multiphysics phenomena. He has probed this problem both from a droplet scale as well as from a macro scale to understand how certain physics origins at the small scale and subsequently cascades into the large scales.[26] He also deciphered key physical mechanisms in nanofuel droplet combustion.[34] He has done paradigm shifting research in context of aerosol transmission, pandemic modelling[35] and face mask efficacy in COVID-19[36].[37]
Professor Basu has published over 225 journal articles with 12 patents and 10 book chapters. He has delivered over 100 invited talks all over the world.
