Sarah Jama

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Sarah Jama is a Canadian disability rights activist from Hamilton, and co-founder of Disability Justice Network Ontario.[1]

Activism

Jama was born with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility. She advocates for accessibility and human rights. Originally from Etobicoke, she now lives in Hamilton after graduating from McMaster University with a Social Science degree.[1][2]

Jama co-founded the Disability Justice Network Ontario in September 2018.[1] She appeared before Canada's Senate legal and constitutional affairs committee in February 2021 to argue against proposed Bill C-7, which she said made it euthanasia more accessible for people with mental health disabilities, rather than providing mental health supports.[3]

In early 2021, she cofounded the Hamilton Encampment Support Network, focused on access to affordable housing.[1] That same year, Jama received media attention when she was arrested in Hamilton while at a protest against homeless encampment evictions in the city.[4] She was accused of obstructing and assault of a police officer.[5] Charges were later withdrawn after she entered into a peace bond.[6]

Awards and Recognitions

In 2016, Jama was included in CBC's list of Hamilton's Top 5 Most Interesting People due to her work with disability justice.[7] The following year, she was awarded the Evelyn Myrie Political Action Award at the John Holland Awards in Hamilton.[8] She was nominated in 2017 for a YWCA Women of Distinction award. Five years later, Jama won in the 2022 awards for community leadership.[9][10]

Career

Jama works as a program coordinator at the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion. Prior to that, she was a community engagement liaison to Councillor Matthew Green at the city of Hamilton.[11] Jama is also a keynote speaker, presenting about issues like leadership, diversity and justice. She has given over 100 lectures.[12]
