Sarah K. Vann
Sarah K. Vann was a professor in the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa[1] and an international scholar. She conducted field studies of the Dewey Decimal System internationally[2], assisted in the establishment of several library schools around the world[2], and served on several American Library Association committees[3]. In 2004, the University of Hawaii at Manoa named an award for Vann that recognizes positive impacts on the Library Information Science profession in Hawaii called the Sarah K. Vann Professional Service Award.
Personal Life
Vann was born in Georgia on May 15, 1916[4] to John and Nina Vann[5]. She died on May 25, 2012 in Kahala Nui, Hawaii.[1]
Education
Vann graduated from the Women's College of Georgia with an A.B. in 1936.[6] She received her bachelor's degree in Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1939[7]. She went on to earn her master's degree in Library Science at the University of Michigan in 1944. She attended the University of Chicago Graduate Library School and was granted a Ph.D. in library science in 1958.[1]
Career
Vann taught at the Carnegie Library School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for fifteen years between receiving her master's degree and doctoral degree. She also taught at the University of Texas at Austin before joining the faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She was a professor there for seventeen years.[1]
Vann helped establish library schools in Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and at the State University of New York at Buffalo.[2]
The Melvil Dewey Office and International Relations Committee of the American Library Association selected Vann to conduct field studies about the Dewey Decimal Classification System internationally. This work aided in the creation of the 17th edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, which was released in 1967.[2]
Vann published several books, journal articles, and book reviews. She wrote about Melvil Dewey and his contributions to the field of Library Science and The Williamson Reports[2], which reflect the findings of Charles C. Williamson's survey of the fifteen library schools that offered at least one year of instruction in 1920 and 1921.[8]
She retired from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1986.[1]
