Sarai Ojeda

Sarai Ojeda (born 1980) is a photographer and sculptor from Veracruz, Mexico. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has won multiple contemporary photography awards.

Early life and Education Ojeda was born in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico, in 1980 to a single mother[1]. Growing up in a matriarchal family and in one of the most dangerous regions of Veracruz[2] had a significant influence on the themes of her work, which “explore the invisible layers of violence that manifest themselves symbolically, emotionally, or psychologically in places with high rates of violence…”[3] Ojeda graduated from the Contemporary Photography Seminar of the Image Center in 2014 and earned a master’s degree in Arts with Honorable Mention from the Autonomous University of Morelos.[3] Notable Projects Donde No Puedas Verme This 2018 photobook consists of images from the inside of Ojeda’s childhood home, as well as intervened family portraits. The project focuses on the oppression and loss of identity the artist experienced growing up.[4] Fragil Her 2007 project consisted of self portraits taken with pinhole and heliograph cameras. Many of the photos in this project are nude portraits, through which Ojeda sought to rescue the powerful receptacle of meaning present in the female body from the male gaze.[5]

Awards Ojeda’s “Donde no puedas verme” project was a finalist of the FELIFA International Prize in Argentina in 2018, and was also presented in festivals such as Paris Photo, Polycopies, Les Reencontres d’Arles, Unseen Amsterdam, and the Los Angeles Art Book Fair. She received first place in the International Festival of the Image- FINI 2014. Her work has been selected in the third Biennial of Veracruz, the second Biennial of contemporary ceramics of Tijuana, the Sixth International Biennial of University arts of Toluca, the seventh Biennial of Puebla de los Angeles, and the first Biennial of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca.
