PT Sari Bahari is an Indonesian private defense company specializing in the design, development, and manufacturing of military weapons systems and ammunition. Founded in 1993, the company operates under the official authorization and license from the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia to produce primary weaponry defense systems (known in Indonesia as Alutsista).
The company is an active member of the Indonesian Private Defense Company Association (Perkumpulan Industri Pertahanan Swasta Nasional or Pinhantanas). PT Sari Bahari is integrated into the NATO global supply chain, registered under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Commercial and Government Entity (NCAGE) database with the registration number 0479Z.[2]
History
PT Sari Bahari was established in 1993 by Ir. Ricky Hendrik Egam in Malang, East Java. In its formative years, spanning from 1993 to 2006, the company operated primarily as a strategic partner to various Indonesian state-owned enterprises (BUMN). During this period, the company shifted its strategic focus toward military research and development, initiating projects aimed at manufacturing the country's first domestic practice bombs for the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).[2]
As a private entity entering a heavily state-dominated sector, PT Sari Bahari expanded its manufacturing capability to bridge the gap in domestic tactical munitions. The production infrastructure was strategically positioned near a TNI-AU airbase infrastructure to facilitate direct technical compliance, logistics, and live-fire test evaluations. Over the decades, the firm progressed from producing inert practice munitions to advanced live, high-explosive bombs and rocket guidance integration compatible with both Eastern and Western-bloc fighter aircraft operated by Indonesia.
Developing from component manufacturing to a major arms manufacturer, producing various variants of training bombs, bombs for fighter aircraft, and missiles. Making history as the first national private industry to export 500 bombs to Vietnam, In December 2024, the Defense Industry Policy Committee (Komite Kebijakan Industri Pertahanan or KKIP) conducted an official working visit to PT Sari Bahari's production facility in Malang. The high-level oversight visit aimed to evaluate the company's production ecosystem, technological readiness, and capacity acceleration to further support the modernization and self-reliance of the Indonesian Armed Forces' primary weaponry systems.[3]
Corporate social responsibility
During the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, PT Sari Bahari engaged in local humanitarian efforts through the "Malang Bersatu Lawan Corona" (Malang Unites Against Corona) task force. The company utilized its precision manufacturing infrastructure to engineer and donate specialized disinfectant spraying equipment to regional community centers, military installations, and public health facilities across the Malang area to mitigate virus transmission.[4]
Activity details
On Friday, January 26, 2024, the Commander of the Air Operations Command II (Pangkoopsud II), Air Vice Marshal Dr. Budhi Achmadi, M.Sc., conducted an official working visit to the domestic defense industry facility of PT Sari Bahari located in Pakis, Malang, East Java. This visit was part of the leadership's working agenda within the Lanud Abdulrachman Saleh area to inspect the capabilities of the domestic defense sector in supporting the defense equipment components for the Air Forces.
During the visit, the military delegation was accompanied by the Commander of Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base, Air First Marshal Firman Wirayuda, S.T., M.Soc.Sc., along with high-ranking officials from both Koopsud II and Lanud Abdulrachman Saleh. The delegation was received directly by the General Manager of PT Sari Bahari, Putra Pratama Egam, M.Si.Han., and the company's management staff.
The agenda of the visit included several inspections of the production site:
- Presentation of Defense Products: A review of defense industry products, specifically dummy weapon systems and military equipment components manufactured at the facility's workshop.
- Inspection of Production Facilities: A direct tour of the manufacturing area to observe the assembly process of combat equipment components.
- Inspection of Storage Areas: A verification of the warehouse and storage systems to assess the readiness and management of defense components prior to their delivery.
This official inspection highlights the operational cooperation between the Air Forces and local private defense enterprises, aiming to support the sustainability of military hardware supply chains and enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities.[5]

The company's corporate headquarters and manufacturing plant occupy a total area of 15,123 square meters. The facility is situated in close proximity to a strategic military airfield operated by the Indonesian Air Force in Malang. This proximity allows secure transport and rigorous technical deployment of manufactured ordnance. The company utilizes a professional workforce consisting of approximately 250 engineers, technicians, and specialists in advanced composite structures and metallurgy.[2]
