Saskatoon Concert Band
The Saskatoon Concert Band is a traditional Canadian civilian band based in the city of Saskatoon, in the province of Saskatchewan. The band comprises two bands: the concert band and the auxiliary band.
History
The Saskatoon Concert Band was founded in 1949 as the 406 Wing Band of the Royal Canadian Air Force. It would later be renamed as the 23rd Wing Band. During this era, it took part in the Canadian National Exhibition as well as performing jointly with Mexican solo trumpeter Rafael Méndez as a guest artist. Ten years later, it was dissolved to create the Kinsmen Concert Band. In the mid-1960s, a section from the band returned to military service, this time as the HMCS Unicorn Band in the Royal Canadian Navy. The band evolved into its current form in 1982 as a non-profit organization. The band has performed at Saskatchewan's Centennial year celebrations, during which it toured Northern Saskatchewan, as well as at events in the Saskatchewan Legislature.[1][2]
Auxiliary Band
The Saskatoon Auxiliary Concert Band was formed in 1987 to cater to a demographic of musicians who had decided to rekindle their musical careers. With the band and the concert band being active, it allows for a range of skill levels to join. It performs at two concerts per year in Saskatoon, as opposed to the three regular concerts and one outdoor concert at which the concert band performs throughout the year.[3][4]
