Satya’s middle-class family, involved in the shoe trade, eventually settled in Gwalior, India. Her father was a businessman, but a devout practitioner of the Bhagavad Gita. Her mother was not educated in the school but was highly intelligent, and though she was a housewife, she was respected and sought out for advice and counsel in the community. Satya grew in the example of her parents to reach out and help others in need, which later in life changed her career path.

Satya, like many Indian girls, went to University, not for a subsequent career, but to find an "educated husband." She completed her Bachelor of Science and went on for M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from Jiwaji University, India in 1969. During her years at university, she met and later married to Krishan Kalra and followed him on the journey to America in 1969, where he began his medical career.
