The Venerable Sayardaw Buddhanta Gandhamālā Liṅgāra (Burmese: ဆရာတော်ဘဒ္ဒန္တဂန္ဓမာလာလင်္ကာရ), Maung Khin Maung Aye, also known as Shwesin Tipitakadhara Sayadaw (Burmese: ရွှေစင်တိပိဋကဓရဆရာတော်), is a Burmese Theravāda Buddhist monk in Myanmar. Myanmar state media have reported that he received the Tipitakadhara Tipiṭakakovida title in 2001, the highest honorific Burmese Buddhist title conferred by the government of Myanmar to Buddhist monks who have passed all levels of Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Selection Examinations.[1][2][3]. He is the 9th recipient in the religious history of Myanmar to receive this highest title, Tipiṭakadhara Dhammabhaṇḍāgārika (Burmese: တိပိဋကဓရ ဓမ္မဘဏ္ဍာဂါရိက)[1][2][3].
Achievements and title ceremonies
In May 2000, The New Light of Myanmar reported that a national religious honoring ceremony had been underway to honour Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws, including Tipitakadhara Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gandhamala Lankara[1].
On 21 May 2001, Ashin Gandhamala Lankara received the Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title and certificate in an official religious award ceremony by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San[2]. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Prime Ministers and their wives, ministers and wives, deputy ministers, heads of department, members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, personnel from religious organizations and devotees[2]. The Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Selection Examinations is held in Myanmar and includes oral recitation and written components of the Tipiṭaka, according to Myanmar’s Ministry of Information.[4] A 2025 Global New Light of Myanmar feature also described the annual examination and honorary ceremonies for recipients of Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida titles.[5]
A national Buddhist ceremony was held the next day to honour Tipitakadhara title recipient Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gandhamala Lankara and other outstanding Sayadaws in Yangon[3]. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gandhamala Lankara emerged as the fourth Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title recipient Sayadaw from the Typeface Nikaya Missionary Upahtaka Board formed by Mingun Typeface Sayadawgyi[3].
The official daily newspaper of Myanmar, the Myanmar Alin listed him as the only honored monk who has passed all levels of the 53rd Tipiṭaka selection examinations (oral and/or written) and accepted the Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title and award certificate at the national Tipitaka award offering ceremony[6][7].
Public activities
In July 2008, Ven Dr Gandhamala Lankara (Tipitaka dhara Sayadaw) delivered a Dhamma talk during the Dhamma Talaka Pagoda's anniversary celebrations to recognize 100 Years of Buddhism in the UK.[8].
In 2019, Eleven Media Group listed him among living Tipitakadhara Dhammabhandagarika monks scheduled to preach at a religious event in Yangon (listed as ဘဒ္ဒန္တဂန္ဓမာလင်္ကာရ)[9].
In 2020, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Gandhamalalankara and donors contributed funds to Myingyan Township’s COVID-19 prevention and treatment committee[10]
