Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal[1] (Malayalam: പാണക്കാട് സയ്യിദ് മുനവ്വറലി ശിഹാബ് തങ്ങള്‍, Arabic: السيد منوّر علي شهاب باعلوي ) is an influential youth leader,[2] politician,[3][4][5][6][7] social activist,[8] and author[9] hailing from the Kerala state of India. As a graduate of globally reputed International Islamic University Malaysia, He was elected as a president of Muslim Youth League[10][1] in Kerala, he is best known for his active role in social media[11][12] as well as a columnist in various Malayalam magazines. He has authored one book and published many articles on various disciplines of Islamic studies & Religious harmony in India[13][14][15][16] and has participated in many international seminars[17][18] and conferences.[19][20]

Personal life[edit]

Munavvar Ali Shihab is a member of the Thangal family,[21] he is a member of the Pukkoya family of Panakkad (north Kerala). He is the son of Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal who is of Yemeni Arab lineage and is believed to be descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. He was born as the youngest son of Panakkad Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal,[3] who was a Muslim religious leader, Islamic scholar, and president of the Kerala State Committee, Indian Union Muslim League,he imbibes his late father's characteristics in trying to find consensus and is inclusive. Munavarali is the best available person from the Thangal family. He is noted for his ties with scholarly persons, educated and has knowledge over things going around globally

Education[edit]

After his primary and secondary level education from Kerala, Munavvar completed his senior secondary education in Chennai. He continued his degree-level education from the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge & Heritage, International Islamic University Malaysia, and completed the course in 2003.

Career[edit]

During his study period at International Islamic University Malaysia, Sayyid Munavvar was elected as the President of the Ummatic Network for Strategic Development, an international organization aimed at the empowerment of the global Muslim community. He also served as the Director of the Education Department of Student Representative Council, IIUM. After returning from Malaysia, he is very active in the social, religious,[22] educational, and cultural fields of Kerala.[23][24] Representing Indian youth, he participated in different international conferences and seminars in various countries including the United States of America, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He also participated in a political exchange program in the United States of America jointly organized by the American Council of Young Political Leaders and the United States Department of State in 2004.
