Schenck Process Group is an international engineering company based in Darmstadt, Germany. The origin of the company can be traced back to 1881 when it was founded as an iron foundry and scale factory by Carl Schenck. In its current form, Schenck Process operates independently since 2005 as a result of a management-buy-out (MBO).[1] In 2017, the company was acquired by the private equity firm Blackstone.[2] Today, it is a global technology and market leader in applied measuring technology. With its solutions, Schenck Process serves the food, mining, and chemicals and performance materials, among others.[1]
The Schenck Process Group develops, produces and sells its technologies and services from more than 40 locations in Europe, Asia, America, Africa and Oceania. In 2020, the group generated annual revenue of 592 million Euro (2019: 632 million Euro).[3] Yearly, the company invests around 3 percent of annual sales in research and development.[4]
History
Historical Development
The Schenck Process Group originates from an iron foundry and scale factory created in 1881 by Carl Schenck. Back then, it mainly focused on scale construction, which built the foundation for future technological developments. First patents followed quickly after its founding years, including those for registration devices (1887) and the first weighbridge with automatic sliding weight for the laden weight of vehicles (1891). The weighbridge was later awarded a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900 and attained international recognition for the company.
In the 1930s, the company built the first weigh feeders, batch weighers for concrete batching plants and road construction material, D-train car-box weighing equipment, and the first luminous image scales. In 1950, the improved luminous image weighing and printing machine initiated considerable technical advances. In 1955, the first electronic crane scale was delivered and marked the way from mechanical to electromechanical scales. The development led to the introduction of digital technology and the use of the first computers, and finally to special scales.[5]
In 1974, Carl Schenck Maschinenfabrik GmbH was transformed into Carl Schenck AG, which went public in 1984. In 2000, the Dürr AG acquired majority shares in Carl Schenck AG. From then on, Schenck Process continued to develop into an independent company within Carl Schenck AG. A management buy-out followed in December 2005.[6]
Schenck Process Today
Schenck Process Group provides high-quality products and integrated solutions in weighing, feeding, conveying, screening, automation, and air filtration technology. Today, it is one of the global market leaders in measuring and process technologies, partly due to several portfolio expansions and acquisitions.
In 2006, Schenck Process acquired Stock Equipment Company Inc. (USA) incl. Stock Redler. This was followed in 2007 by the acquisition of Fairfield Engineering Parts Company LLC, which was eventually renamed Stock Fairfield Corporation. Another acquisition took place in 2008 with the takeover of the Australian company Screenex Pty Ltd. One year later, in 2009, the Czech company TEDO s.r.o. was incorporated into the Schenck Process Group. Further inorganic growth took place in 2011 with the acquisition of Clyde Process Solutions, a supplier of air filtration technology and pneumatic conveying and injection technology, and the screen lining manufacturer Pentec.[5]
In 2017, Schenck Process was acquired by the private equity firm Blackstone to drive further growth.[2] In 2018, the company grew through the acquisition of intellectual property from FPE Global Limited, as well as the acquisition of Raymond Bartlett Snow, a pulverizing, classification and thermal processing provider. In addition, 2019 saw the acquisition of Process Components Ltd. and with it the expansion of the powder processing and handling division to include the industrial brands Kemutec, KEK-Gardner, PPS Air Classifier Mills, and Mucon®.[5]
In November 2020, Schenck Process expanded its existing food and pet food product portfolio with the acquisition of Baker Perkins, a leading global supplier of food processing equipment for the bakery, confectionery, cookie, cereal and pet food markets.[7]
Corporate Structure
In August 2019, the company adopted an organizational approach by regions. The new structure maps the regions AMS (Americas), APAC (Asia Pacific) and EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa). The three regions serve the two business units Original Equipment (abbreviated OE; product-based equipment and solutions) and Aftermarket (abbreviated AM; services, spare parts and consumables).
The new organizational structure is represented by the Group Leadership Team, which consists of the Executive Board, the regional heads, the Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Technology Officer and the Chief Human Resources Officer.[4]

Technologies
The technologies and solutions of the Schenck Process Group can be used in a wide range of industries. Generally, they can be divided into the following three areas:

Material Processing & Aftermarket Capabilities
Applications for material processing are part of the group’s core competencies. In addition to industrial weighing technology and feeding systems for continuous and discontinuous processes, this area also includes screening, grinding and classification technology for material preparation processes. Filter systems or pneumatic and mechanical conveying systems are also part of the company's repertoire. In addition, the Schenck Process Group has experience in the areas of mixing, screening, grinding, drying and conveying of various bulk materials.[8]
In the area of Aftermarket, the company offers spare parts and consumables for an extensive range of machines and products, as well as various services. These range from field and remote service for troubleshooting to consulting on process optimization or the modernization of existing systems.[9]
Digitalization
The company increasingly invests in the digitalization of its internal processes and the development of data-driven digital services for its machines and solutions. The focus lies on customized condition monitoring of individual machines, as well as optimizations and predictions.[4][10]
Among the latest digital solutions are the PROXiQ™ remote access system, which enables remote access by a service technician in the event of error messages and problems[11], or the CONiQ® Monitor condition monitoring software.[12] In the fall of 2020, the Schenck Process Group extended its CONiQ® family with its newest weighing controller CONiQ® Control. In the future, this digital brand will enable the combination of various applications.[13]
In 2021, Schenck Process has its own cloud, which is used to broker services to specialized customers.[14]
CONIQ® Family
The condition monitoring system CONiQ® Monitor is a smart product used for continuous condition monitoring of various parameters, such as temperature and mechanical vibration. It ensures early damage detection and condition-based maintenance of the machines and monitors critical operating parameters. CONiQ® Monitor is a condition monitoring system specially optimized for vibratory machines.[12]
As of September 2020, the CONiQ® product range includes the new CONiQ® Control unit, a control and automation system with options for use in industrial measurement, weighing and automation technology. The controller was initially designed for simple weighing applications such as platform and unit load scales with strain gauge load cells, but further application modules are optionally available to the user. Further application possibilities, for example for continuous processes, are to follow in the coming years.[13]
In 2019, CONiQ® Control received the Red Dot Award for its clear, easy-to-use interface design.[15]
The latest addition includes the cloud-based IoT-solution CONiQ® Cloud, which offers a wide range of options for data-driven maintenance and system optimization. The Cloud builds the backbone for digital add-ons of Schenck Process. As part of the current cloud approach, a configurable edge device called CONiQ Monitor was released in 2021 to connect the fleet of Schenck Process machines to the cloud.[14]
PROXiQ™
The PROXiQ™ remote access system enables remote access by a service technician to machine controls to detect faults at an early stage. A router ensures that access via the wired or mobile network, allows service technicians to access specific systems and use diagnostic tools. Since access is only possible through an appropriate certificate and is protected by firewall and passwords, the remote access system is considered extremely secure.[11]
During the COVID-19-related lockdown in March 2020, PROXiQ™ was successfully used for the first remote commissioning of a new system in the UK. In the wake of the 2020 coronavirus crisis, the company was able to further expand its remote services and now offers various other assistance systems such as CONiQ® Remote Assist, which is currently being deployed in Australia.[16]
Markets
The most important markets for the group’s technologies and services include the food, mining, chemicals & performance materials, and infrastructure & energy sectors. Within these markets, the Schenck Process Group also serves various sub-industries.
In the Food segment, the company offers complete systems for pneumatic conveying, filtering, weighing and feeding, as well as screening and mixing of various bulk materials from the food and animal feed sectors. Solutions in the mining sector include screening and high-precision train loading as well as digital services such as software automation, remote or remote access services, or smart condition monitoring. Pneumatic conveying and systems for filtration, weighing, and metering are used in the Chemicals & Performance Materials business area, while weighing, metering, grinding, crushing, and conveying are among the core competencies of the Infrastructure & Energy sales markets.[17]
Corporate Social Responsibility
As a group, Schenck Process is actively contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations. The company's products, solutions and technologies serve diverse end industries and contribute to a more sustainable future. All offerings of the group undergo continuous improvement to guarantee more resource-efficient production and use.[18][19]
The company also supports various social and environmental projects worldwide. On German Unity Day in October 2019, the company participated in the "Einheitsbuddeln" initiative founded in the same year and donated more than 500 new trees for the reforestation of German forests.[20]
