The Schlossturm (English: castle tower) is a tower located on the Burgplatz in Düsseldorf and is used as a shipping museum.

Description[edit]

The castle tower originally formed the northern end of the Düsseldorf Castle. The first three floors of the tower date back to the 13th century. In 1552 Alessandro Pasqualini added a fourth polygonal floor to the tower, decorated with Tuscan columns. The idea of a fifth floor came from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. His court architect Friedrich August Stüler implemented it in 1845 in the so-called round arch style. In 1883 a new portal was added to the tower by Eberhard Westhofen. The round arches on the fifth floor were also glazed. In 1909, when a tent roof was built, the tracery attic was removed. Today's tent roof dates from 1950. The Maritime Museum has been housed in the tower since 1984. In 2001 the tower received a new interior design. Overall, the height of the castle tower is 33 meters.[1][2]
