Science clubs are associations that intend to provide an opportunity for students to participate and explore activities related to science. There are different science clubs, each of which is defined by its purpose, advisor’s philosophy, and goals. The activities organized by science clubs are usually student-oriented as it supports and nurtures the interests of the students in Science.[2]

Science Clubs direct the energies of students, help them develop skills and talents which satisfy their instinct and urges. Some concepts in science cannot be taught either in a laboratory or in the classroom, for teaching such concepts science clubs proves to be useful. The science clubs work in alliance with the classroom instruction. It provides a supportive environment for its members to explore science which builds confident learners and educators. The science clubs promote the development of skills such as critical thinking, experimentation, and problem-solving. They facilitate the overall development of the students’ personality.[3]

Teaching science in schools through textbooks is never complete; there will always be a gap in understanding of the subject by the students. The science clubs play a major role in bridging this gap. These clubs are important in perceiving the impact of science in temperament, thinking and day to day practices of life and disseminating the use of science to society. Their job is to eliminate unscientific ideas rapidly from society which is not easily possible for any other media.[4]

Science clubs are defined as "an organization, which helps in the development of scientific attitude and develop a genuine interest in science and scientific activities, supplements the work of the classroom and the laboratory, and parts the syllabus on a practical basis."[5]

Aims of science club[edit]

The science club aims to help people in developing scientific attitude in life through activities like science quiz, science exhibitions, science fairs, model-making, discussions, etc. They use scientific knowledge and its technological application for the welfare of society. These clubs through scientific clarification expose to so-called supernatural events and spread scientific temper. Science clubs play a crucial role in communicating science.[4]

In schools, science clubs help the students to acquire basic knowledge of science, develop a scientific way of learning and increase awareness concerning scientific issues in personal, social, environmental and technological framework.[6]

Objectives of science club[edit]

The science club cultivates interest among the students to learn science. It encourages the students to actively participate in activities organized by the club. It promotes the utilization of Information Technology in Science learning. It provides an opportunity for the students to comprehend science through experimentation.[6] Science club provides incentive and inspiration for the quest of scientific knowledge by broadening the scientific point of view. It gives a chance for bringing the school close to the society and explains to the people the services and contribution of science in their lives. It develops the spirit and attitude of healthy competition among the students for the individual and social cause. It supports the students in imbibing the habits of self-dependence, self-reliance, and love for manual work. It provides an opportunity for the development of explorative, constructive and inventive faculties of the students. It teaches the students to use their time properly while making them understand the value of time. It advises the students to get acquainted with the life histories and contributions of the great scientists. It gives an opportunity for the students to practically apply the knowledge related to different branches of science. It develops training in the scientific method of problem-solving and inculcates scientific attitude. It encourages individual and group activities while promoting the development of scientific interest and inculcates a sense of healthy competition. It keeps the students in touch with the recent advancements in science.[7]

Organization of a science club[edit]

A well-organized science club will be an important aid to teach science and also to motivate students in learning science. The interest and enthusiasm of the students along with the contribution of the organizers play an important role in the successful working of the science club. The science teacher and the students form the important components of the science club and its activities. The science teacher should explain the significance of the science club to the students and awaken enthusiasm among the students. The discussion will be followed by a meeting with office-bearers. The science club should have its constitution along with a general body and executive body.[8]

Steps in organizing a science club[edit]

1.Call a meeting of all interested students in a science club.

2. Explain the purpose and organization of such a club.

3. Select a committee to formulate a constitution.

4. Elect officers.

5. Adopt a constitution and give each member a copy of it.

6. Adopt a name of your club that will suggest its special interest.

7. Make a club worthwhile and membership an honor and privilege.

8. Hold initiation ceremonies.

9. Make it a real club.

10. Adopt a badge or button for the club.
