Scooterworks USA is an American online retailer and distributor of scooter parts, accessories, and performance upgrades, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1989 as a scooter parts and repair shop, the company has grown into one of the largest dedicated scooter parts suppliers in the United States, serving over 500,000 customers and shipping to 14 countries.[1]

Scooterworks USA is closely associated with Genuine Scooters, an American scooter manufacturer the company helped establish in 2002 as an in-house brand. In April 2025, Scooterworks USA acquired Parts for Scooters, expanding its product catalog to become one of the most comprehensive scooter parts inventories in the country. History

Founding (1989)

Scooterworks USA was founded in 1989 in Chicago, Illinois, by Phillip McCaleb as a Vespa parts supply and repair shop. The company initially operated out of a building in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood, with an adjacent space serving as a workshop and office. Its early focus was on sourcing replacement parts for vintage Italian scooters — a niche with little competition in the American market at the time. [3]

The business occupied a mail-order catalog model in its early years, selling vintage Vespa and Lambretta scooter parts and accessories to enthusiasts across the country.

Genuine Scooters spin-off (2002)

In 2002, McCaleb moved to establish Genuine Scooters as an in-house manufacturing brand under the Scooterworks umbrella, prompted by growing demand and the perceived quality gap in available scooters.[3] The first Genuine model, the Stella — a four-stroke manual transmission scooter with classic Vespa-inspired styling — was manufactured in India at the same factory that produced Vespas.

The expansion of Genuine Scooters required significantly more warehouse and office space than the original location could provide. Scooterworks relocated to a larger facility at Grand Avenue and Western Avenue in Chicago.

Genuine Scooters was eventually spun off as a separate entity. By 2014, Genuine had become the third-largest scooter brand in the United States by unit sales, behind only Honda and Yamaha.[3]

Online expansion and catalog growth

As Genuine Scooters grew independently, Scooterworks USA continued to develop its parts and accessories business. The company expanded its online catalog to cover a wide range of scooter platforms, including modern and vintage Vespa and Piaggio models, Honda Ruckus, Yamaha Zuma, GY6-engine Chinese scooters, and modern Genuine models. Scooterworks also became an authorized U.S. dealer for several European performance brands including Malossi and NCY.[1]

The company developed a series of technical reference resources on its website, including battery compatibility charts, chain size guides, oil capacity references, and illustrated maintenance guides — resources that became widely cited within the scooter community. Among the more distinctive features developed was "Shop by Diagrams," an exploded-view parts navigation system allowing customers to identify and order components by visual part location rather than part numbers alone.

By the mid-2010s, Scooterworks had served over 500,000 customers and expanded international shipping to 14 countries.[1]

Acquisition of Parts for Scooters (2025)

On March 28, 2025, Scooterworks USA announced the acquisition of Parts for Scooters, an established online scooter parts retailer. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.[2]

The acquisition added brands and product lines that Parts for Scooters had carried, and expanded parts support for Genuine, Honda, Yamaha, Vespa, and GY6/QMB platform scooters. Parts for Scooters' full product catalog became available on Scooterworks.com beginning in May 2025, including replacement parts, accessories, and high-performance parts for scooters, ATVs, mini bikes, pocket bikes, and mini choppers ranging from 49cc to 250cc.[2]

Matt Maney, former president of Parts for Scooters, joined the Scooterworks team to oversee the transition following the acquisition and has since departed. Adam Sawyer, national sales manager at Scooterworks, described the deal as "an exciting milestone" for the combined company.[2]

Operations

Scooterworks USA operates as an online-first retailer and wholesale distributor based at 2700 W Grand Ave, Chicago, Illinois.[4] The company operates on the Shopify e-commerce platform and ships to customers in the United States and 14 other countries, with multi-currency display support.

Products and brands

Scooterworks USA stocks replacement parts, accessories, and performance upgrades across a broad range of scooter platforms. The company carries original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for numerous brands as well as aftermarket and performance components, and distributes several proprietary and exclusive brands.

Supported platforms include modern and vintage Vespa and Piaggio models, Genuine Scooters, Honda, Yamaha, Kymco, TaoTao, and GY6-platform Chinese scooters. Following the 2025 acquisition of Parts for Scooters, the catalog also expanded to cover ATVs, mini bikes, and pocket bikes.

Performance and aftermarket brands carried by Scooterworks as an authorized dealer include Malossi (Italy), NCY, Polini, Cuppini, Pulley, YSS, and Koso. Belt manufacturer Bando is among its OEM-equivalent component suppliers.

Prima is a Scooterworks-owned accessories brand offering a range of scooter lifestyle and replacement accessories. Greenline is a Scooterworks brand covering electric bikes and electric scooters, reflecting the company's expansion into the personal electric mobility market.

Electric vehicles and emotos

Scooterworks carries parts and accessories for electric scooters, electric bikes, and emotos (electric motorcycles). Supported brands include Segway, NIU, and Hiboy, among others. This category covers replacement parts, batteries, and accessories for personal electric mobility products across a range of brands and platforms.

Notable features

The company's Shop by Diagrams feature provides customers with exploded-view technical diagrams of scooter systems — including engine, transmission, electrical, and body components — allowing parts identification by visual location. The tool covers several major Genuine scooter models as well as other popular platforms.[5]

The Scooterworks blog maintains a library of reference charts and technical guides, including battery fitment charts, drive chain size guides, oil capacity references, and step-by-step maintenance tutorials for specific models. These resources are frequently cited in scooter owner forums and have been referenced in community discussions as primary technical references for GY6-platform and Genuine Scooter maintenance.
