Scotland District
The Scotland District is an area of Barbados covering much of the east coast. It has rolling hills, sharp peaks and steep cliffs.[1] Due to the bright green grass interspersed with white rocks, occasional grazing cattle, and frequent rain and fog, it is reminiscent of Scotland's landscape.[2]
Origin
Many Scottish descendants live on the east coast of Barbados. During the extractive colonization of the island, Scottish people were brought to Barbados as indentured servants or against their will. It is possible that this is the origin of the name.date=4 January 2021
National Park
The Scotland District contains five identified National Park landscapes: The St Lucy Coastal Cliffs, The Savannahs, Chalky Mount, The Scotland Basin, and Hackleton's Cliff.[1]
Landfill
The Greenland Landfill is located in the National Park in the Scotland District. It has never been used, and there is an explicit policy stating, "Any applications for new landfill sites or expansions to existing sites in the National Park will not be permitted."[1] The controversy around this landfill has made the Scotland District appear in the news many times.[3][4]
Lawsuit
In order to maintain that there should not be a landfill within the national park, there was a lawsuit between the Scotland District Association and the Attorney General.[5]
