Scott Murphy (born 1991, Glasgow) is a Scottish jazz saxophonist and composer based in Hong Kong[2]. In April 2024 Scott released his debut solo record ''a dream of form''[3].
Early life[edit]
Scott Murphy began playing saxophone through the Dumfries Youth Jazz Group[4] taking lessons with Paul Towndrow. While at school he toured with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland[5] and the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra (TSYJO)[6].
He briefly attended the University of Strathclyde[7] before moving to join the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland[8]'s jazz performance course.
Career[edit]
Scott co-founded Scottish Jazz large ensemble Fat-Suit [9]with guitarist Dorian Cloudsley[10] composing and arranging for the group[11] whilst also appearing with Billy Ocean[12], the BBC Big Band[13], Graham Costello's Strata [14] underground jazz fusion group KWORTET[15] and performing at various festivals such at the London Jazz Festival[16], Edinburgh International Festival[17] and Glasgow Jazz Festival[2]. In 2016 he was chosen as an ambassador for Glasgow Jazz Festival in their "30 under 30" programme[18] and worked closely with BBC Radio Scotland on their weekly show 'The Jazz House'[19][20].
Upon moving to Kuala Lumpur in 2016 Scott created the group NewSound[21] alongside pianist John Dip Silas and recorded their debut album Bearing Witness in 2018[22].
Since relocating to Hong Kong in 2018 Scott has appeared with acclaimed pop group RubberBand[23], local jazz acts such as Tjoe Man Cheung's #NTBM[24] CY Leo (何卓彥) [25] and the Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra[26]. He has also appeared as a featured artist for the Hong Kong Cultural Masseur Festival[27] with Nahum[28], the Hong Kong Jazz Composers Lab[29] and the Freespace Jazz Festival[30] as part of the innovative "Jazz Imaginarium"[31].
In 2024 Scott announced the release of his debut solo album[32] online and through Hong Kong news outlet RTHK[33]

Scott Murphy's debut record a dream of form was released on April 20th 2024[34] and features Janek Gwizdala, Daniel Chu and Padget Fresh Nanton.[35]
