Scrabdackle is an upcoming action-adventure game developed and published by jakefriend set to be released on Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux in summer 2023.[1]

Players control a junior wizard named Blue who, after an attack on the wizard academy they attend, has been forced to leave it for the first time. They must explore the land of Scrabdackle to find a way back into the academy.

A demo was released on Itch.io on September 1st, 2020 and an updated demo was released October 12th, 2020 which added a new area called the 'Rubble Ruins'.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

The focus of the game is to explore the nonlinear world of Scrabdackle and earn new abilities, items and learn new spells. At the beginning of the game, you are equipped only with your 'Scrying Glass'[3], an item, very similar to a magnifying glass, which allows Blue to hone in on landmarks, people and creatures in the world and record them in his notebook. The player later finds a wand, which allows them to cast different types of spells. In the demo of the game, the only spell you could cast was Strata Blast, a simple spell which fired a projectile that damages enemies on contact. More spells will be available in the full game, including the Witchbrand which acts as a melee attack, almost like a sword.

Characters[edit]

There are many characters in the game, some with entire questlines about them and some who only ever appear in the background.

Name Description
Blue The protagonist of the game. Blue is exploring the land of Scrabdackle to find a way back into the academy.

Skrine A strange, cat-like creature who exists in some sort of pocket dimension that Blue can enter.
Peanuts The residents of Peanut Village.

Publishing Issues[edit]

Scrabdackle is a self-published as jakefriend turned down the offer from an unnamed studio to publish it for him. The reason he gave for this decision is that the studio that reached out to him had rules in their contract to do with what happens after you breach the contract which Jake felt was exploitative.[4][5] The contract stated that if there was a breach in contract from jakefriend, the publisher would get 100% of all revenue from the game.
