Scurry is a webcomic by Mac Smith following a colony of mice and rats struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone.

Description[edit]

Scurry began in January 2016.[1] In January 2021 the first full story was completed, making up three books.[2]

Prior to the start of the story, some kind of apocalyptic event has occurred and all humans are gone; only animals remain. A colony of mice and rats, who have long depended on humans for food, are clinging to their old ways, scavenging houses in an abandoned suburban neighborhood to find whatever scraps are left behind. Food is becoming scarce, a gang of cats is hunting, and while scouts were sent to the city, they have not returned. The bonds of the colony are tested and dissent rises. While the elderly leader Orim values caution, Resher wants to take the colony to the city, despite the danger such a trip would mean. There are rumors of a food truck in the forest, and Wix, a mouse keen on adventure, is keen to travel into the unknown woods.[3][1]

The creator Mac Smith described Wix and Pict as the main two characters, describing Wix as brave, capable, and a slightly overconfident scavenger and explorer, while Pict is being groomed by her father to be the next colony leader and seeks to make the colony more self-sufficient. Smith said that he had had the idea for Scurry in his head for a few years, before starting to design and draw it, and that the post-apocalyptic setting came after initial thoughts about mice on adventures.[1]

Reception[edit]

A reviewer for The Booklist Reader described Scurry as "cinematic" and "luminescent" with "a heaping dose of gritty realism". They noted the "detailed, near-photorealistic scenes" and glow "fantastic, dynamic movement and expression" of the characters and deep, intricate backgrounds.[3] A writer for ComicsAlliance called it "terrific" and "a blockbuster success", and noted that Smith had successfully launched a Kickstarter pitch to print the first book.[1]
