Seán Ó Murchú
Seán Ó Murchú (born John Joe Murphy; 1922 - 27 October 1982) was an Irish radio presenter.
Born at Caltragh, Belclare, County Galway to Patrick Murphy and Mary Moran, Ó Murchú attended Castlehackett National School and Tuam CBS before joining the national broadcaster RTÉ as a continuity announcer in 1953.[1] He founded the traditional Irish music programme Saturday Night Irish Dance Music shortly afterwards, which became Céilí House in 1957. The programme continues under this name today, now presented by Kieran Hanrahan. Before the availability of television in Irish households, the weekly Céilí House audience was in estimated to be in excess of one million people.[2]
He presented the programme up until shortly before his death, and was succeeded by Breandán Ó Dúill. Ó Murchú was a member of the RTÉ Authority sacked by Taoiseach Jack Lynch in October 1972, after the station broadcasted an interview with Seán Mac Stíofáin.[3]
Ó Murchú died at St. Luke's Hospital in Dublin on 27 October 1982, and was buried in Donaghpatrick Cemetery, in his native parish, three days later.[4]
