Sea Group (also known as Sea and stylized as Sea) is a global consumer internet company headquartered in Singapore that operates in markets including Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Latin America. Its core businesses include digital entertainment, e-commerce (online shopping), and digital financial services, known as Garena, Shopee, and SeaMoney respectively.[1]
Sea was founded in Singapore as an online gaming company, Garena, a portmanteau of "global arena", in 2009.[2] In May 2017, the company announced that it had changed its name to “Sea”.[3]
On October 20, 2017, Sea completed its initial public offering and listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SE in the largest ever U.S. IPO by a Southeast Asian tech company.[4]
History
As Garena, it diversified into other businesses such as digital financial services through AirPay in 2014, and e-commerce through Shopee in 2015.[5] In 2017, Sea moved into games development with the launch of Free Fire, the first game fully developed in-house by Garena.[6]
In May 2017, Garena announced that "Sea", an acronym for Southeast Asia, would be the company’s new name at the corporate holding company level, while "Garena" would still be maintained for its digital entertainment business.[7]
In the fourth quarter of 2019, Sea introduced “SeaMoney” as the overall brand for its digital financial services business.[8]
