Sean Carvajal
Sean Carvajal is an American actor who won the 2018 Lucille Lortel award for Lead Actor in a Play for his performance in Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train by Stephen Adly Guirgis, produced by Signature Theater Company.[1] Carvajal joined the cast during previews after the departure of the play's leading actor. The play, set in Rikers Island prison, tells the story of Angel Cruz, a 30-year-old bicycle messenger awaiting trial for killing the leader of a religious cult. In prison, Angel is befriended by Lucius Jenkins, a born-again serial killer who challenges Angel's beliefs about himself and the actions that sent him to prison. [2]
Sean Carvajal also won the 2018 Clarence Derwent Award given by Actor's Equity for most promising male performer.[3] He has also appeared in Ghetto Babylon (59E59), Lissabon (LaMaMa), Seven Spots on The Sun (Cincinnati Playhouse), Dominica, That Fat Ugly Ho (LAByrinth Intensive Ensemble), Between Riverside and Crazy (Studio Theatre), and Water by the Spoonful (Premiere Stages). [4]
Carvajal is also the recipient, along with his Jesus Hopped the A Train costar, of a special 2018 Drama Desk Award. The award commended their impact on the production: "To Sean Carvajal and Edi Gathegi of Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, whose last-minute entrances into the Signature production of this powerful play ensured it had a happy real-life ending."[5]
