Sean Christopher Lewis
Sean Christopher Lewis (born February 12, 1978)[1] is an American comic book writer[2], theater artist, filmmaker and radio essayist. He is sometimes credited as Sean Lewis. He was born in Denver, Colorado to Christine Garnham and Richard Lewis. He grew up in Pine Bush, NY. He received his undergraduate degree from Binghamton University before receiving his Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting at the University of Iowa. He is best known for his solo performance KILLADELPHIA (or CITY OF NUMBERS), which won the 2010 Smith Prize[3] from the National New Play Network and the 2010 Barrymore Award for New Collaborations[4]. He also writes comics for Image Comics.
Theater
Lewis began his playwriting career with the National New Play Network. He served as their inaugural playwright in residence at Interact Theatre in Philadelphia before winning the 2009 Smith Prize for his play KILLADELPHIA (or CITY OF NUMBERS). In 2011, he created JUST KIDS[5], which won the 2011 Central Ohio Critics Circle Award for Best Performance. In 2014, he created DOGS OF RWANDA which went on to make end of year lists in Philadelphia[6] and Arizona[7] before completing an Off Broadway run at Urban Stages[8] in New York City.
Seeking directing opportunities he founded Working Group Theatre in 2009. He directed and co-created their shows MAYBERRY, BROKEN CHORD, OUT OF BOUNDS and ALL RECIPES ARE HOME. Their play RUST (written by Austin Bunn) was excerpted in the New York Times Sunday Magazine[9] and was awarded a National Performance Network Creation Fund Award. Their play OUT OF BOUNDS (written by Jennifer Fawcett) won the 2014 New England Foundation for the Art's National Theatre Project Award[10].
Comics
Lewis' first published comic book was SAINTS[11] with Image Comics. Art was by Benjamin Mackey. He has published THE FEW, COYOTES[12] and THUMBS with Image Comics. He published BETROTHED and CLANKILLERS with Aftershock Comics. He also contributed to Heavy Metal Magazine's anthology DEATH BY DESIGN: A TRIBUTE TO MEGADETH, edited by Dave Mustaine.
Film
In 2014, Lewis created the feature film THESE HOPELESS SAVAGES[13]. It was purchased for distribution by Meridian Releasing[14]. He directed ADULT ED[15]. (created by Matt Dellapina) which starred Campbell Scott and premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. His short films include SAFE and FUTURE SELF.
Radio
Lewis contributed to Episode 425 of This American Life, in a story called "Isn't it Slo-mantic."[16]
