Sean Weber-Small
Sean Weber-Small is an American television producer, writer, and director best known for his work on music-related television specials for Country Music Television (CMT) and for his appearance in the 2025 HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes. He has produced more than 30 television programs, primarily for CMT, and was previously recognized for his role as the stepson of musician Billy Joel during the height of Joel's early career. He is currently a Partner and President at the Experiential marketing firm AGENC.
Early life
Sean Weber-Small is the son of music manager Elizabeth Weber and film and television producer Jon Small. During the 1970s, his mother married singer-songwriter Billy Joel, and Weber-Small spent much of his childhood in Joel's household. Their family life during this period was later chronicled in the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes.
Grateful Dead Touring
Between 1985 and 1991, Sean Weber-Small contributed as a live audio location recording engineer, or "Taper", for a number of Grateful Dead performances. He is credited in multiple archived concert recordings for providing front-of-house audience recordings using high-end analog-to-digital conversion equipment, including modified Sony PCM-F1 units and Schoeps microphones. His recordings have been preserved by the Live Music Archive on archive.org and remain part of the public historical record of the Grateful Dead's musical legacy.
Career
Weber-Small began working in television production in the late 1990s becoming a Producer, Director and Executive Producer for a wide range of Film and Television programming many of which aired on CMT and MTV Networks.
He is also credited as the producer and writer of the independent film Block 57 (2016).
He currently serves as President and Partner at Agenc, an Experiential marketing firm.
Public recognition
In 2025, Weber-Small appeared in the HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released on HBO and Max. In the film, he discusses his experience growing up as the stepson of Billy Joel and reflects on his family’s private history and its impact on Joel’s early career.
