Sean Webley
Sean Webley is an American cinematographer and filmmaker. He has worked on documentary, narrative, and experimental films that have screened at festivals including South by Southwest (SXSW), DOC NYC, and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Webley received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film from the Columbia University School of the Arts.[4]
Career
Feature films
Webley was the cinematographer for Before the Sun Explodes (2016), directed by Debra Eisenstadt, which premiered at South by Southwest.[5] Coverage of the film appeared in the Los Angeles Times, IndieWire, and the HuffPost.[6][7][8]
He was also director of photography for La Restauración (2020), directed by Alonso Llosa. The film was shown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and was later acquired by Shoreline Entertainment.[9] The film was reviewed by Screen Comment and Film Threat and discussed in a Yale MacMillan Center article on contemporary Peruvian filmmaking.[10][11][12]
Documentary and experimental work
Webley co-directed the short film Beef (2022) with Brendon Kingsbury. It received the Spirit Award at the Brooklyn Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at the Nashville Film Festival.[13][14]
He was cinematographer for The Voyage Out (2024), which premiered at DOC NYC.[15]
Webley also worked as cinematographer for Seconds Away (2025), a documentary about an Olympic hopeful’s training and competition. The film was featured in a 2025 Forbes article covering its production and story.[16]
Installations and research
Webley collaborated with the MIT Media Lab on the project Two Mobility Futures 0∞, which was included in the 2022 Guggenheim Museum Bilbao exhibition Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture, curated by Norman Foster.[17][18] The exhibition was covered by outlets including the Volkswagen Group, Gagosian, Forbes, and the Architecture MasterPrize.[19][20][21][22]
