Sean Wheeler (born September 20, 1966) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and author best known as a member of Throw Rag, and most recently Sean Wheeler and The Reluctant Messengers. He has also played with Brant Bjork, The Rocksteady Seven, Zander Schloss, Joe Buck (musician), Fatso Jetson, Sun Trash, and Charley Horse.
Most recently, Wheeler's primary musical projects are his solo work, the band Sean Wheeler y Los Caminos,[1] as well as the band Mario Lalli and the Rubber Snake Charmers.
Early life
Born in Palm Springs, California, Wheeler is a descendant of early Homestead Acts settlers in the Palm Springs area. His great-grandparents, Oliver and Rose McKinney, were among the first non-native families to move to Palm Springs in 1915. Raymond Cree, Riverside Superintendent of Schools at the time, guaranteed work for Oliver McKinney and his custom-made well-digging apparatus, with the ulterior motive of getting the town to qualify as a district, as the McKinney's five children brought the number of students in the area to the necessary minimum.[2] The McKinneys owned the current Deep Well Estates back in the 1930s. Sean grew up working at the family car wash. As a child, he was hyperactive and was a candidate for Ritalin in the 1970s. While his mother worked to support the family, she allowed Sean to navigate his own path, which led to the consumption of cannabis at an early age, as well as animosity with some of his neighbors. He made the Raymond Cree Middle School Football team and was into playing baseball, but traded school sports for skateboarding. An avid skateboarder, Wheeler was drawn into the Southern California punk rock scene in the late 1970s. He began singing in punk bands and helped launch the California desert rock scene in the 1980s with garage punk parties at his mother's house.[3]
Career
1981–1992: Early Music Projects
While in high school, Sean Wheeler's first project was the hardcore punk band Mutual Hatred, which played locally in the Coachella Valley and became an influential local band. His next band was ska-punk outfit The Sciotics, which also played locally and Southern California throughout 1983. The yob-rock band Bouncing Souldiers and Sleng Teng group Dr. Strangelove followed closely afterward. After venturing to Seattle, Washington, where he played with punk-n-roll act Vein Train, Wheeler returned to the desert to form the similarly-themed Junkyard Angel. From 1987 to 1988, he led the "greebo/sleeze rock" band Zezo Zece Zadfrack and the Dune Buggy Attack Battalion, which is credited with having influenced the new generation of desert rockers in the late 1980s, including people like Brant Bjork and Josh Homme, who would go on to form the band Kyuss. [4] In 1989, Wheeler moved into more traditional rock with Cactus Slim and the Other Desert Cities band, the songs and style of which would lay the groundwork for the formation of Throw Rag.
1993–2005: Throw Rag and Charley Horse
Throw Rag launched in October 1993 and became Wheeler's most popular and enduring band. After the release of the Desert Shores album in 2003, Throw Rag toured internationally as both a headliner and support for bands like The Damned, Motorhead, X, Queens of the Stone Age, and Joan Jett.[5] Throw Rag became an influential band in the punk music scene of the 90s and early 2000s for artists like Dennis Casey of the band Flogging Molly.[6] Concurrent with his role as lead singer of Throw Rag, Wheeler also served as the frontman for Charley Horse featuring Chopper Franklin of The Cramps, a dark roots band that debuted at SXSW in 1995, toured intermittently, and recorded two albums. [7]
2006–2014: Sun Trash, Buck & Wheeler, and Sean & Zander
By 2006, Throw Rag had come off the road and reduced their activity to occasional live shows. Wheeler formed Sun Trash (featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, and Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal), a "deranged, heatstroke-addled pop/rock"[8] band, performing in Southern California and recording an album released in 2017.
2007 saw a collaborative recording and tour with Joe Buck (musician), releasing the "Buck & Wheeler" EP. 2007 also marked the beginning of a collaboration between Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss of Circle Jerks[9], releasing the "Walk Thee Invisible" album produced by Gus Seyffert, which marked Sean Wheeler's first full foray into acoustic Americana.[10]
2015–2018: The Mutants, Solo Work, The Reluctant Messengers, and Brant Bjork
In 2016, Wheeler contributed vocals to the "Your Desert My Mind" album by punk rock supergroup The Mutants[11] featuring drummer Rat Scabies of The Damned and bassist Chris Constantinou of Adam Ant's band, both of whom he continued to collaborate with in the group One Thousand Motels in 2021.
Sean Wheeler was featured as a live guest artist on tour with Brant Bjork and part of his Low Desert Punk band from 2016 through 2019,[12] and recorded on his Mankind Woman LP (2018). [13] He was also featured live with David Hillyard & the Rocksteady Seven from 2017 through 2018. Wheeler also appeared on the Rocksteady Seven’s The Giver album. [14]
In 2017, Wheeler released Sand in My Blood, his first proper solo album, which features both originals and interpretations of relatively obscure songs from the American canon.[15] He has performed these songs live as Sean Wheeler and the Reluctant Messengers, featuring Jimmie Vaughn's guitar player Billy Pitman. [16]
2019–2022: Sean Wheeler y Los Caminos, Rubber Snake Charmers
2019 marked his first year curating Wheeler Fest, a Mexico City-based music festival featuring a wide variety of artists and styles.[17] Wheeler Fest 2019 also marked the debut of Sean Wheeler y Los Caminos, a unique "soul punk" collaboration with established Mexican musicians Mikey Hernández (bass), and Rosca Blanco (guitar) from the band Rey Pila, drummer Cachi Zazueta from Elis Paprika, and American pianist Erik Deutsch. [18]
A collaboration with Messer Chups in 2020 resulted in four tracks recorded for and released on their Don't Say Cheese album.[19]
In 2022, California Desert rock pioneer Mario Lalli created the band Mario Lalli and The Rubber Snake Charmers, featuring Sean Wheeler, Brant Bjork, and Ryan Gut.[20] The band was the support act for the band Stoner's European summer tour of 2022. [21]
