Sebastian Brandt (preparator)
Sebastian Brandt (born 25 February 1981 in Erfurt, Germany) is a German model maker, palaeontologist and fossil collector. He is the founder of the workshop Reco-Brandt, which produces scientific models and habitat dioramas for museums and exhibitions.[1][2]
Life and work
Sebastian Brandt studied Fine Art at the Bauhaus University, Weimar.[3] He is based in Kornhochheim, Thuringia, Germany, where he develops scientific models for museum contexts.[4]
His work focuses on creating nature-identical botanical models, palaeontological reconstructions and habitat dioramas.[5] According to institutional descriptions, the models are created by casting real biological structures and reproducing them as durable exhibition objects.[6]
In a public lecture at the Natural History Museum of Erfurt, Brandt presented what was described as an innovative method for reproducing plant structures, which has been referred to as "unique in Europe" in institutional communication.[7] These models are used in museum contexts to illustrate biological structures and ecological relationships.[8] According to media reports, such models are employed to visualise habitats and natural processes in exhibition settings.[9][10]
Brandt's work has received multiple awards at the European Taxidermy Championships.[11][12] His models are also regarded, in part, alongside the botanical models of Robert and Reinhold Brendel, the wax fungus models of the Austrian botanist Leopold Trattinnick, the papier-mâché anatomical models of the French anatomist Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux, and the zoological and botanical glass models of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, as part of a tradition of internationally significant scientific modelling.
Paleontological work
In paleontology, he has focused on the scientific study of ceratites from the Upper Muschelkalk of Thuringia.[13] A central aspect of this work has been his collaboration with the Thuringian paleontologist Siegfried Rein, with whom he conducted morphological and stratigraphic analyses of these cephalopods, examining fossil material from different stratigraphic horizons to document variability and evolutionary patterns.[14]
Together with the Hessian paleontologist Manfred Schulz, he co-described the decapod species Antrimpos germanicus (Brandt & Schulz, 2013) and Parapalaemonetes thuringiacus (Brandt & Schulz, 2013).[15]
He is a member of the support association of the Natural History Museum of Erfurt, to which he donated in 2018 a prepared skull of the Triassic reptile Nothosaurus jagisteus (Rieppel, 2001) as well as a body fossil of the ganoid fish Colobodus maximus (Quenstedt, 1867), both prepared by him.[16]
In his work as a palaeontologist, Sebastian Brandt discovered a new ceratite species that was described and named Sturia brandti in his honour by Siegfried Rein in 2019.[17]
