Sebastian Jacoby (born 8 April 1978 in Oberstdorf) is a German curler and quiz player. He became known to a wider TV audience in April 2012 as champion on a quiz show called Der Super-Champion on the ZDF network. Since 2013, he is a “chaser” on Gefragt – gejagt, the German version of the U.K. game show The Chase.

Curling

In 1996, 1997, and 1998, Sebastian Jacoby was a member of the German junior national team. Under the leadership of skip Sebastian Stock, the team ranked 3rd, 6th, and 4th at the World Junior Curling Championships in Red Deer (Canada), Karuizawa (Japan), and Thunder Bay (Canada), respectively. Later, Jacoby joined the team of SC Riessersee under skip Rainer Schöpp. The team’s greatest success was runner-up in the 2005 German Championships.

Between 2007 and 2009, Jacoby took part in three European Mixed Curling Championships, winning the bronze medal in Madrid (Spain) in 2007 and the gold medal and championship title in Kitzbühel (Austria) in 2008 with a victory over the [Czech Republic].[1]

Quiz

Since 2005, he has been hosting and moderating quizzes in Oberstdorf and Duisburg. Since 2007, he has been taking part in the annual World Quizzing Championships, where he consistently ranked among Germany’s top three participants.[2]

In April 2012, Jacoby was one of the contestants on the ZDF quiz show Der Super-Champion (now named Der Quiz-Champion), hosted by Jörg Pilawa. In the course of the show, he first defeated five celebrities and then his competitor Matthias Moehl in a three-round tiebreaker, securing the €500,000 prize.

In May 2014, Jacoby and his team “Quiz Champions” appeared on the first season of Quizduell, the German TV adaptation of the QuizClash app game. The quartet was able to defeat “Team Germany”, i.e. TV viewers who played the live game simultaneously via app 16:13, winning €22,000 in prize money.

Since 2013, Sebastian Jacoby has been appearing in the role of a “chaser” on Gefragt – gejagt, the German version of the U.K. game show The Chase, initially broadcast by ARD affiliate NDR on their regional channel, before moving to the national Das Erste channel in 2015. His nickname on the show is „Der Quizgott“ (“The Quiz God”).

Sebastian Jacoby is a member of the German Quizzing Association (Deutscher Quizverein/DQV) and takes part regularly in the tournaments and championships hosted by the organization. In 2012 and 2014, he became German champion in the individual competition, while winning the doubles competition in 2013 and 2017 together with Sebastian Klussmann, as well as the team competition in 2019 (the first year it was held) with Sebastian Klussmann, Roland Knauff, and René Waßmer.[3] In 2013, 2016, and 2017, Jacoby also won the German buzzer quiz championship.

Education and professional career

After graduating from Gertrud-von-le-Fort-Gymnasium in his native Oberstdorf, Jacoby studied Economics at University of Duisburg-Essen and Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In 2002, he received a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). He works as a budget analyst for ThyssenKrupp.
