Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University (Czech: 2. lékařská fakulta Univerzity Karlovy); (Latin: Facultas Medica Secunda Universitas Caroli) is a pre-graduate and graduate medical school based at Motol University Hospital and is part of Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.[3]

It is one of the three faculties in Prague originating from the mother founder Medical Faculty of the university founded in 1348.[4][5]

History[edit]

Medieval era[edit]

Second Faculty of Medicine has been part of Charles University ever since its foundation by Charles the fourth (Czech: Karl IV) during the medieval era in 1348. At that time the three medical separated faculties in Prague of today (First, Second, and Third) were all collectively a one faculty, the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague.[6]

20th century[edit]

The current Second Faculty of Medicine used to be the Faculty of Pediatrics which was founded in 1953 and lead the pediatric medicine training for several years. The Faculty of Medicine in Prague split into the three faculties of today and each gained their independence while retaining some level of cooperation and conjoined programs especially post-doctoral studies and subspecialty programs. In 1990 the former name Faculty of Pediatrics changed to the current name Second Faculty of Medicine. The Second Faculty of Medicine acquired premises in 1989 that used to serve as a military training base at Plzeňská in Motol, which is walking distance from the teaching Motol University Hospital. This became known as the Plzeňská Campus designated for the theoretical departments for teaching and research facilities.[6]

Modern times[edit]

The faculty currently teach and train the whole field of medicine. However, it still retained its central role as the leading pediatric hospital in the region. The building of the theoretical institutes under went multiple reconstructions and expansions replacing the original buildings in 2011, in 2019, and in 2021. The old campus located in Motol University Hospital surrounding vicinity is still in use and designated for the library and language departments. The clinical training continued to take place in Motol University Hospital that had doubled in size. The administration and dean's office remained in the Motol University Hospital located in the center between the old hospital and the new extension.[7]

[edit]

The Second Faculty of Medicine uses a modern modified version of the traditional heraldic emblem of a pelican feeding its young. The symbolic meaning of the pelican is derived from the medieval fables where the pelicans selflessly scarify themselves to feed their young. The iconography of the logo stem from a long line of ancient tradition of the pelican symbolic in medicine.[6]
