Secretary of State for Cornwall

The secretary of state for Cornwall is an occasionally proposed office in the Government of the United Kingdom, with responsibility for a hypothetical Cornish Office.

One cited reason for the creation of the role is to settle the Constitutional status of Cornwall, and elevate it to the same status as other Celtic nations in the United Kingdom, who are all represented with Government Departments (the Secretary of State for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively).[1][not in citation given]

History of the role[edit]

The office has been suggested several times in history, for example, by the MP for St Ives, Alec Beechman in 1939.[2]

On 26 July 2007, David Cameron, while leader of the Conservative Party, appointed Mark Prisk MP to the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Cornwall. The creation of the role received both praise and criticism, as there was no equivalent government ministry to 'shadow'. The move drew additional criticism as although Prisk had been born in the Cornish town of Redruth, he was not MP for a Cornish constituency. Some members of parliament criticised Prisk for hearing complaints from residents of Cornwall while in the role, as it was argued to be a breach of parliamentary rules on doing constituency work outside ones own constituency.[3]

The creation of the role has drawn support historically from organisations supportive of Cornish nationalism and Cornish devolution, such as the Celtic League and the Cornish Constitutional Convention.[4][page needed]
