Sekyiwa Shakur

Sekyiwa Shakur (born October 3, 1975) is an American Philanthropist and current Leader of the Tupac Ameru Shakur Foundation. She is known for being the half sister of famous rapper Tupac Shakur.

Early life[edit]

Sekyiwa Shakur was born in Harlem, New York on October 3, 1975. She is the daughter of Afeni Shakur (1947-2016) and Mutulu Shakur

Both of her parents were Political activists and former members of the Black Panther Party. Her mother was charged for crimes related to the Black Panther Party, including the Panther 21 . But was later acquitted and that caused her to leave the Black Panther Party. Her father was also involved with crimes in the Black Panther Party including the 1981 robbery, but was not captured until 1986. In 1981 Sekyiwa's parents divorced and she moved to Maryland with her mother and her brother. However they did not stay there long and soon relocated to California. Since then her mother has overcome drug addiction and has founded the Tupac Ameru Shakur foundation. Afeni was the president of the foundation until her death in 2016. And her father later went on and found the New York organization referred to as “Dare 2 struggle”.

Sekyiwa describes her early childhood as troubled and problematic[1]. Her mother was addicted to drugs and would “Pay more attention to Tupac”.[2] Her mother was known to overcome drug addiction and attends Narcotics Anonymous . She however has not put the blame on her mother and has since moved on.

Personal life[edit]

Recently, Sekyiwa Shakur has revealed that she had two children in her late teens with her husband Gregory Jackson, who was known to be a close friend of Tupac Shakur's.

She lived most of her life in privacy because she states “I kind of like my privacy. Because [as seen with] my brother, his real name was his stage name, he couldn’t escape into a private world. I didn’t want my identity out there.[3]

Sekyiwa Attended Clark Atlanta University and volunteered at Phyllis Wheatley YMCA while she was there.

Philanthropy[edit]

Sekyiwa is the President and Acting CEO of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation. She is also a dedicated Mental Health & Wellness Advocate.

She has been involved with activism from a young age since both of her parents were part of the Black Panther Party

Mentions[edit]

Sekyiwa is commonly referred to as ‘Set’ by her friends and family. The 45 year old sister of Tupac was also portrayed in his biopic, All Eyez On Me, in which Tupac referred to her as ‘Seky’ in the movie.
